Hey guys, i'm new around here, but i'm hoping you have some suggestions for me.
i just got a call from my grandpa (a retired carpenter) who found a two inch thick piece of rosewood lying around in his collection.  he wanted to know if i wanted to make a guitar out of it.  I don't have a whole lot of experience in making guitars (only a few strats which i posted a few pictures of not long ago) so im wondering what ideas you guys have for what to do with this.  I'd hate to cover up the rosewood with a pickguard.  what would you guys do given the opportunity?

cheers :occasion14:

Well, personally I'm partial to rosewood teles.

But I think a rosewood Les Paul Jr. (flat top with P90's) would look awesome.

Send me the rosewood, I will make a nice LPS out of it. You will be so proud when I post up pictures you will want to show them to everyone

pretty tempting to give it away, but i'll probably hang onto it.
i really like the thought of a tele or a lp.  is it possible to do a les paul without a laminated top?

Both Warmoth and USA Custom would be happy to do the work for you - and you'd get to KEEP your own guitar! :toothy12: (sorry, boys....)  If he just "found" it, it's probably well-aged, but you'll have to check it really carefully for cracks, voids etc. People here recently pointed me at the mothership of body plans, here:

and supposedly here but I can't make it load right now:

You could at least check it for relative size.

Awesome!  thanks for the info.  i havent seen the wood yet, so i dont know the exact dimensions or its shape, but i'll chuck up a picture or two when i see it.  I'm guessing its very aged and stable as his other boards have been.
how do you do the lines for the wires up to the pickup switch if there's no laminated top?  i'm pretty sure the board will need a side by side lamination in order to make it wide enough for an lp. would i drill the hole before i glue the two sides together?

I'd let it show through with a rear route and no pick guard .  Rosewood can be a skin , eye and repsitory irratant .. where good protecton

See http://www.wood-database.com/wood-articles/wood-allergies-and-toxicity/    good info for anybody working with exotics

Double concur with being careful.  I had a nasty reaction to padouk.  Its no fun.  You can also get more sensitive to it over time which is what happened to me.

indeed .. had a few repistory problems over the last decades ... they are kind of like women .. the more exotic  the more dangerous
