I searched around the interwebs for it and found nothing on the specific species of maple. Which either means it's commonly known or it's never specified.
I know they at one time used it. I had a 93' strat that used "eastern hard rock maple" for the neck. It was in the literature. Most likey they don't use it any more since it's much better to be able to say something more descript like "rock maple". No marketing person ever misses a chance to bump it up.
