Replacing a Fender Blacktop Jaguar body

So I have two Fender Blacktop Jaguars. One is a P90 model, the other humbuckers. I want to change the body wood and color of each, so I thought I'd order new bodies for them. But the spec tool on the Warmoth site doesn't allow for anything other than standard Jaguar pickups. Is there a workaround? I'm willing to use another body type if need be. I really just like the necks on these guitars, as well as the 24" scale with the P90s and humbuckers.

You might just try calling them, and see what can be done...You'd be surprised... :turtle:

There is very little difference between the size and overall shape of the Jazzmaster and Jaguar bodies, as offered by Warmoth.  For some reason, the Jaguar body is very limited in what they to with it, esp. with regards to non-vintage style bridges.  On the other hand, the Jazzmasters have almost as many options as the Strats and Teles.  I'm not sure if your neck and existing hardware would fit transplant well onto a Jazzmaster body, but it's something worth considering.

They will fit but the scale length is different between jazz master and jaguar, so that would be kind of awful and it wouldn’t intonate.

I put humbucker sized / noise canceling p90s in my jag and am still in love with it....

It looks like the routing on the Jaguar allows you to put any type of pickup in there - single coil, P90, humbucker.
But the pickguard Warmoth offers is only routed for single coils, so you'd have to modify that yourself.

I presume they'd rather not take calls all day about something so basic that may not even lead to an order, and calling from my office is not something I can always find time to do, so I emailed them. The route might take other pickups, but I'm not 100% sure about that, and it's always better to know before buying.

I might keep the current bodies and have them refinished instead, but a new body would allow a different bridge (the Blacktops have tune-o-matics, and I'd prefer a simpler fixed bridge) without having to get repairs done to fill in where the old one was.

A good finishing job is not a trivial task, so it's expensive. Refinishing is liable to cost you close to or more than new bodies.

No doubt, it's not cheap. I have a line on a few refinishers already. And of course, I'd have to get the finish on the new body as well. It's not a slam dunk either way. But we'll see whether Warmoth can make a replacement body for this guitar. If so, great. If not, then there's no decision to be made.

What wood is the blacktop Jaguar bodies made out of, and what wood do you want to change to?
I'm thinking just refinishing the existing bodies might be the cheapest option, rather ordering a full body & having it routed to suit and finished by Warmoth (and shipped to you). Especially if they um & ah and agree to do a one-off pickup rout for an Alder or Basswood Jaguar body.
