Refreshing an old friend

I love em, RG. Super impressed that you're a flyer. What are you scooting around in these days?
Don't have one at this time. Used to spot fish for the commercial fleets here and South to the border. Used to do it in a highly modified Cessna. Did my own maintenance and radio work, some of it pretty oddball stuff. Converted it to a taildragger and put a bigger engine in it. Had 12 hours of fuel on board.

That's about as cool as it gets.  I bet that Cessna was a rocket. You miss working on rotaries?

There's an airport across the street (John Wayne) and my wife and I discovered an amazing museum on the non-commercial hanger end that you'd dig.  Houses a working/restored B17 and a couple other hidden gems.  They let you walk under the bomb bay doors and touch it. Sexy beast!

Thanks, Frank. It had an O-320 Lycoming engine but, yes, I miss working on them. I've been to that museum. It is cool. If it's the same one I remember. I haven't been there since the late 80's. Been into most of the airports down your way at one time or another.

I was based at Meadowlark field in Huntington Beach for a while, then Oxnard when we lived in Ojai. Those were fun days. The most fun I had, though was flying charter out of Kingman, AZ. We often landed in the Grand Canyon on the edge of the inner canyon about 1000 feet above the river to pick up river rafters. Flew down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon a few times, too. I was kind of a cowboy back then. Great fun. Have a few stories from those days.
