Refreshing an old friend

Scopes are cheap these days.  I picked up a 2 channel Tek lunchbox (full color!  Storage scope! 100MHz!) for under a grand including probes.  That was extravagant because it was a new unit.  With the high-tech bubble popping 10 years ago you can probably get a used one for a fraction of that.

Frank!  You need a scope.

You are correct!  I haven't used a scope since electronics classes about a dozen years ago lol.  There's always YouTube!

Surprising, since you build amps. I wouldn't even attempt that without a signal generator and a scope. They're indispensible. Even more so if you wanna do mods. Gotta be able to see what effect you're having almost as much as hear it.

Man, my faceplate can't get here fast enough!  Good thing I reckon - cleaned up and reorged my parts bins and found some nice Belton bear traps.  Well, I couldn't just leave them in there like that!  Also did a little refresh of the labeling round back since some things have changed.  Penmanship: not my forte.

Note: If you look around the IEC cutout, you can see a little asymmetry; I had to use a nibbler on that and the power transformer's cutout.  The joy of not having the best tools - but you know what they say about necessity.  I've got a new IEC inlet en route - a cool little unit that has built in EMI protection.  Ferrite bead?

Nice. I dunno about the face plate, though. The current one has a healthy amount of cool. :glasses9: Of course, the new one will be more so.

A delay in the delivery of my faceplate has caused me to come up with my most thoughtful and professionally executed design to date.  Feast your eyes on this!  :icon_biggrin:

I have to say, the master volume on this amp is tremendous!  I dialed in a bit more preamp gain (not apparent until dimed) that really works to saturate the tubes with the master set low.  It sounds better than the drive I get with my Maxon OD-808!  No need for the EP Boost or Tone Press.  At any volume this amp can get really touch sensitive OD on its own.

The clean tones are really juicy and bouncy - really the best of the Blackface type for my taste.  Very sweet tone with great touch response.

The mid-shift, which I borrowed from the Champ II circuit is PERFECT!  No honking mids - just a touch more upp mids to leave an uncluttered an beautiful tone that will help to cut live.  It stays on.

The fancy-pants designers at Hughes & Kuttner and other shops that give us fancy multi-colored LED-through-plexiglass displays have nothing to fear from the Fabulous DeSalvo - except tonally, which is what really matters.

I need lasers

Oh, man!  I'm such a sucker for vintage pilot lights!  So much so, I ditched the 115V saucer lamp and went back to the ol' faithful filament powered, 6.3v lamp.  Have a look at this!

Red is a much better contrast against the future gold faceplate than the older amber lamp ever was.  I love the small screen on the interior of the lens.

View across poweramp.  New turretboard for forthcoming mods.

The lamp assembley cleaned up very well.  It was filthy, sitting in its unopened packaging for many decades.

I agree. LEDs ain't got nothin' on an old diffused or jewelled incandescent pilot light. And at 6.3 volts, they last about 80 bajillion years.

I'm another one in the jeweled incandescent indicator light crowd. There's just nothing like them. I have a couple that I'll use one of these days. Gear indicator lights from aircraft. Replace the 24v bulbs and they're good to go.

Probably goes back to earlier times when you were waiting in anticipation for a band to take the stage, and all those little red lights meant the amps were pre-heating so they could romp and stomp without tearing a hamstring or something. It's exciting stuff. Makes you wanna smoke a joint eat a sandwich so you can calm down a notch or two.

Done.  Now I can remove the pilot light for service without desoldering.  Will come in handy when the faceplate arrives.  Guess I'll have to start playing guitar again.  Not sure I enjoy that as much as I do building these days!

All my stuff is scratch built. Man this sucker nails SRV and Mayer tones with the TS and Tumnus. Kills for heavy tones too. Really pleased with this amp.

I like the use of the Molex connector. I used them extensively in the radios in my airplane. They're really effective and don't fail easily.
