Recorded an original with My W guit and bass

Kind of an acoustic countryish song. About a guy drivin across country to see his woman. I've been working on learning home recording.

I used my Warmoth Dinky P bass as a direct injection into an apogee duet and my iMac using pro logic. American fat stack bass modeling and I turned the gain down a bit. The bass comes in on the second verse (tried to build a crescendo with this song

Background electric guitar picking is my Warmoth zebracaster on the bridge pearly gates humbucker, split coil, fairly clean amp modeling.

Main guitar - Gibson J-200 through a Fishman aura set on Jumbo through a Neuman model.

Drums - EZDrummer (toontrack) virtual drummer.
Keys - EZKeys (also toontrack) virtual piano. Brilliant program. I cannot play keyboards and this numbskull (me) programmed this stuff in.
Pedal steel and percussion and various other things - apple loops from Big Fish audio.


Critiques encouraged. I already know the vocals need heaps of work but feel free to comment on those as weLL :glasses9:

Here's the bass, Umbuia laminate. It's killer even though the name "Dinky P" can have negative connotations, I've got enough confidence to not let it bother me.

Even though DI has it's critics, I find it easy as a recording method and I'm happy with the sound.

I think the recording was done well. Guitar might have just the tiniest bit too much presence, but that's just going by one listen.

I like that bass a lot. You're right; they could have chosen a better name. Still, it's a fine-looking/sounding instrument.

Thanks Cagey! It's been a steep learning curve for me. Too much presence is exactly what there is too much of. I was going to say too much treble but presence is it.
I went through the Fishman Spectrum Aura directly into Pro Logic rather than a mic. I choose a J-200 "image" as they call it but just a touch too bright. I have to say it's really fun doing the whole recording thing.

No doubt. I think it's an entirely different frame of mind, and not many guitarists can get there from here. I've tried it more than once, and at one time it was recommended as therapy if I ever wanted to play guitar again. But, it's just doesn't fit for me. I can't think that way. An excellent example would be one of the members here (Hachikid) playing the bass line from The Who's "The Real Me". You can more clearly hear what Mr. Entwistle was doing when that song was written/recorded, and it's nothing a guitar player would do. Anything from Geddy Lee (Rush) is also testament to how good bass players not only think/hear outside the box, they're not even in the same box as guitar players are. It's a whole different world. To ask a guitar player to play bass well is like asking them to play drums well. It just ain't happening.

I agree, the bass is a completely different mind frame. I'm basically trying to go the "play with the bass drum" route. It's essentially what I did on this song.

I would love to be able to play/write something like McCartney's treatment of Something. It's almost like a bass lead solo but doesn't detract from the song at all, in fact in my opinion, helped make the song the number 1 that it was.

The Beatles were an exceptional group of musicians. Their compositional skills were extraordinary. None of their stuff stands out as anything technically complex or difficult, but it was highly musical. Almost anybody would not mind listening to it, if not love it to death, which is pretty unusual. I mean, even orchestras and Musak loops do their stuff.

I don't know where I'm going with this. Bass players rule, is all I'll leave it with.

I'm just so glad I built one. I think I would have been happy with a J or P bass but not this happy nor this custom of an axe. I'd like to take this opportunity to show it off one more time.
I recorded a video of a favorite song beginning of mine to show the versatility of a 335 as well as show off the bass.

The 335 through a vox AC-30 computer model with overdrive and the rhythm is through a Fender Twin Reverb amp model fairly clean.
Bass is direct injection as before.
