Rear Route Covers - Anyone Make Them in Wood?

While I appreciate Warmoth including the black rear route cavity cover, I find it ugly. Is anyone making these in wood?

Thanks!

A member here used to make them.

It wouldn't be too difficult to have someone make you one, or do it yourself if you have a handheld router. You could use a handheld drill for the mounting holes and countersinks.

Now that you mention it, I kind of want to try making a cover, myself. Maybe I could make you one.

A slightly easier compromise is to cover the plastic in veneer. Use super glue (VENTILATE), go slowly, and you can make some pretty nice ones that already have a pretty durable finish (lacquer to taste). This is one I did with Padauk veneer. I messed up the bottom, but if you are careful yours will be better.

Speaking of rear route control cavity covers...

Does anybody know where I could get a cover for the old-style Warmoth VIP body? It's sorta "V" shaped, as opposed to the "kidney" shape they do now. I suppose I could make one, but I hate playing with plastic. The shavings seem to have a mind of their own - it's like trying clean up packing peanuts.

Have you tried a PRS backplate? That's what it was modeled after.

I never seriously considered it. I just figured since the bodies come from two different manufacturers, the chances of the parts being interchangeable weren't very high. Now that you mention it, I can find what looks like the right thing on eBay, but it's $15. They say "PRS SE & EG Stoptail Bridge Electronics Backplate Cover For All SE Models With Stoptail Bridges." Is that what the VIP is modelled after? I've never been a student of PRS's model line, so I don't know what Warmoth was copying at the time, or how faithfully. I guess I could just take a chance. It's only $15, after all. Still, I'd hate to have to just throw it away. $15 is almost a case of beer <grin>

I assume the body you have looks like this:

If so, I think you've found the right cover. I'm not certain if the SE plate matches the USA models exactly, but I don't see why they wouldn't.

Yes, very much like that, but without the routing for a vibrato.

I think I'll just buy the PRS part, like you suggested. Worst thing that could happen is it doesn't fit and I toss it. Lesson learned, good for future reference. As lessons go, it'll be one of my less expensive ones by far <grin>

As long as we're looking at that body, does anybody know what PRS model the VIP was based on?

Looks like a Standard 22 or Custom 22 (difference unknown to me).

Yeah, it does look a lot like that, but not exactly. I'll have to wait until I get home someday to refresh my memory of what mine looks like. But, I'm pretty sure I've got a blade (Strat-style) pickup selector switch, and I don't think the controls have recesses. Of course, since it's a Warmoth, who knows what was ordered originally? Plus, I see descriptions of at least 4 different models in the listing you linked, even though they all look pretty much the same. I suspect the difference between a Custom 22 vs. Custom 24 is the fret count, but what's a "standard" vs. "custom"? And what what's a "McCarty"? Does it change the control cavity route? Or, maybe just its position? I called Warmoth, but this is the second time in as many months I've asked and there doesn't seem to be any collective memory about the things or any details available. All they'll say is they can't source the cover. PRS must've slapped 'em hard enough that it rattled their mother's teeth by proxy. To be fair, it was well over 10 years ago they were making these things and I don't know if any of their sales folk have been there that long. I'd probably have to talk to Mr. Warmoth himself.

ACtually, the CE22/CE24 seems like a good candidate - that was (is?) a bolt-neck offering.  Although the neck didn't (doesn't?) bolt on like a typical strat joint - it's much further into the body, behind the neck pickup by the look of things:

That does look close, other than the neck heel joint and the vibrato cavity. I'm going to bookmark this page so I can compare it when I get home. Barring unforseen circumstances, that should be tomorrow.

It may come to that, but it is an older body, and Guitar Center isn't very well-known for the breadth of their inventory. Plus, I don't drive, so I can't do it on a whim. Still a good idea, though. There's another place not too far from here that stocks nothing but higher-end stuff, a lot of it custom-shop work. If nothing else, I could probably leave the body and have somebody make a cover that would fit. I don't have any time into the finish yet and I'm not even going to try to save the one that's on there, so they really couldn't hurt it.
