I always wonder how somebody can come into a forum and make broad statements about how gold/platinum selling groups generally SUCK. I guess those groups bought their own product just to say they sold millions.

Just because a band/person sold millions doesn't mean they are good, look at mainstream today. SUCKS. I love some of the music from the '90s IMO it was the last time good innovation was in music. Now, everyone copies each other and music is going down the hole, I just can't stand it, it makes me sick. We need some kind of revival.

That's right. That is the number ONE response whenever it's pointed out that a particular band's music sucks. "Hey, they've made MILLIONS of dollars!"  Or, "They make more money that you've ever made!". Well, that doesn't mean sh!t. The majority of music buyers are musically illiterate and a bunch of sheep when it comes to marketing and peer-pressure. They let SOMEONE ELSE decide what the latest greatest music is.

Street Avenger seems like a very bitter guy. Must have been really bummed out when Warrent couldn't sell any more records. :laughing7:

I'm not bitter about anything. I just hate the dumbing-down of music and musical taste that has occurred during the past 15 years.

Imma gonna guessa Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, (insert amazing grunge metal here), SRV, and the list gets EVEN BETTER as we go further back in time.

AND SURPRISE! I'm only 17 (Winger, but really, 18).

Kind of goes with the other number ONE response that ALL music from an era sucked. To sit here and try to convince us that every song written or played during the 90's was crap, is nothing more than well, crap.  :dontknow:

Just because you couldn't find any YOU liked doesn't mean it wasn't there.  :icon_thumright:

BTW, welcome to last week.  :icon_tongue:

15 years. 2010 - 15 = 1995

The GOOD grunge was in the beginning of the 90's. Just like the GOOD hair metal was at the beginning of the 80's for the most part. (Not Always)

He's talking about originality of music. I would say AIC's heavy use of phrygian could be considered "unique"

Grunge is the easiest and hardest genre for me to define.  It's not necessarily a sound because Nirvana was very punk oriented, Sound Garden and Alice n Chains were the more metal of the Grunge bands, Pearl Jam would have to be the pop radio friendly Grunge.  Screaming Trees were kind of in there, but sound like a rock band.  I don't know what you'd call Sonic Youth.  It's not necessarily location specific because SilverChair and STP are considered Grunge but not from Seattle.  Candlebox is from Seattle and are not considered Grunge.  The "Singles" (1992) soundtrack is said to have the Seattle sound and it's got Paul Westerberg, Smashing Pumpkins, Jane's Addiction, and The Cult on it.

Grunge.  You know it when you hear it.

Good ol' Paul Westerberg (The Replacements), homegrown talant. Better than the hack that came out before him. (A man formerly known as "The man formerly known as "Prince"")

Prince is an amazing talent. Seriously the guy is unbelievable. Maybe you were being sarcastic, can't tell in text without more clues (or a smilie or something).

I agree... the only problem is, it's obvious he lost his Man Card a long time ago, and I find that... disturbing.

did anyone tell him his p is backwards?

I was mildly joking.... He's an amazing musician, it's just not my style of music.

BTW, I'm not an boom-boom, I just pretend to be one. Please endure.

man cards are stupid things

I think what happened to him is he lost his sanity card.

but the dude still rips on guitar.

Yeah, Prince is an amazing musician, and someone I'd love to see play live over and over.  I don't think I'll be sporting eyeliner like that anytime soon though.

That's one crazy guitar (I expect he's got quite a few of these). Unfortunately the round bit with the pickups etc does make me think 'toilet seat'. Hmmmn.

Er Keef wears eyeliner too mate.... No problemo with his Man Card. Frankly I couldn't care less if Prince was or wasn't, er, you know, it's his music I'm interested in.

I have long respected Prince's musical ability. And to think he does a lot of the music by himself or is capable of doing that. Some of his live guitar work peels the paint off the walls it's that darned scorching hot in tone. I think he's been using EMG actives for ages and also uses something like a Mesa Boogie for his main amp - that sort of tone...

If you like Prince and/or Kevin Smith, you HAVE to watch all three parts of this:

Mind bending stuff! And KS is a fantastic storyteller.
