Question about tuner buttons

Are all tuner buttons pretty much the same? I'm having my headstock drilled for Sperzel tuners, but I found a set of GFS tuners with buttons that are PERFECT for the guitar. And they're cheap. Could I just pull the buttons off them and put them on the Sperzels?

No, all tuner buttons are most definitely NOT the same. There are many different types, all with different dimensions, that require different reams. The mounting screws can be in many different locations, and some also have guide-pins that must be drilled for. You will need to get the specs and measure to see if the new ones you want will fit.

Okay thanks. I figured that was probably the case, but didn't want to re-invent the wheel if it wasn't.

He is asking about tuner buttons, not the posts or how the tuner fits onto the headstock.

Some buttons are interchangeable on different tuners, no idea if they are between the GFS and Sperzels.

Sperzel themselves have a fair few buttons available.

Yeah, but they don't have what I want, which is unfinished brass.

Apparently Sperzel buttons are a little different than others so you may be out of luck unless a google search reveals an aftermarket button in brass or something else you may like.

There are various aftermarket buttons for Sperzel on ebay, but no brass ones. It might be worth contacting some of the sellers to ask if they can help.

Oops....you're right. Reading comprehension fail.

Of course they are. *Sigh*. I really like Sperzel tuners.

I can probably get Mike at Armadillo to make me a set, but I'm sure it won't be cheap.

I have used GFS tuners before.  They fit perfect in the warmoth Gotoh peg hole.  This is slightly larger than the sperzel hole.    IF you are not 100% sold on the sperzel tuners, you could enlarge the hole and utilize the GFS tuners.

To answer the OP, I am not sure if the buttons are compatible.

If the headstock is already drilled for Sperzels, 10mm bore, you could also go for Hipshots or Schaller tuners. It is more likely that the buttons off the GFS set you mentioned would retrofit or an aftermarket button may be available.

I did a quick google search and did find some possibilities, but not sure what style you would be looking for.

Sperzel does have satin gold, which is close.  Won't tarnish over time like brass (which may be the entire point of wanting brass, I don't know), but it'll fool some people.
