Question about LP build...

Dear forum!

I have a dumb question...

Can a Warmoth LP be built without a bolt-on neck? Can it just be glued in the neck pocket?

Know'd I'm sayin'?  Thanks. :)

Warmoth only offers bolt ons. What you can do after you get it is shave the heel down so it looks & feels like a neck-thru.

I've seen them glued in, but I don't think it's a good idea. Structurally, set necks are built differently than a bolt on.  It's not just glued in instead of bolted.

If you don't want a bolt on neck then warmoth's not for you. If you must have a set neck than you, my friend, are missing out...

People have glued the necks in place.  I think it's a bad idea myself.

But - it's your guitar.

You could do it, but it's highly unlikely it would last very long, if it survived the tension of being strung up. There isn't enough glue surface, and there's no mechanical interlock. Glue-on necks usually have some sort of dovetail or mortise/tenon joint for mechanical strength, and to increase the gluing surface area. Besides, contrary to popular belief, a bolt on neck is tighter and will give more sustain than a glue-on in solid body guitars. The opposite is true of acoustic guitars.

taylors have bolt ons. my big baby has great sustain, and that is about the cheapest taylor you can get. i believe even the larger ones bolt on but is a different type of joint, the bolts go in from the inside if i remember right.

That's a relatively new innovation that Taylor does. They haven't always done that, and it's definitely not typical of acoustic guitar design. It works for them, but then, a lot of things do. They make some very fine, well-designed instruments. I went for years without an acoustic until I could afford a Taylor.

I still think the glued-in neck and the obstructive nature of the neck tenon on a Gibson LP is a design flaw.  Bolt-ons are better in every way if you ask me.  But hey, whatever floats your boat.

I absolutely agree. No wood to dampen the vibration, etc etc. its at least as sturdy as a glued on/in neck. the only neckjoint which might be better, is the neckthru/deep set neck, cause that constructionmethod also involves one big lump of wood with everything attached to that.

Yeah, neck-through construction is a totally different thing which I think is pretty cool.  But a glued in neck is not that.

Ok, thanks for the replies. Yeah after a bit of searching I see where the neck-body joint design on LPs is quite different from a bolt-on joint. GOT IT!
