Question about Dome Knobs

In short...

Building a LP.  Have all the parts but the knobs ordered.

This is what I want, but to be honest, $4.25 each is kind of steep.

I see telecaster dome knobs for sale all the time on ebay.  Will those fit a Les Paul Allparts potentiometer set with no issues?

This is the basic look I'm going for, only chrome instead of gold.

Make sure your pots match your knobs - the split-shaft pots with splined shafts won't work so hot with that tele knob you've pictured, but there are split-shaft dome knobs out there.  Alternately, that knob will work with a solid-shaft pot.

I've been putting those knobs on split/splined shafts for years. They're almost the only thing I use. The trick is, you have to position them on the shaft so the set screw hits the gap between the two halves of the split shaft. That way, the shaft doesn't get compressed (and possibly broken), and the knob doesn't sit on the shaft at an angle. There's no indicator line or dot or numbers on the thing, so orientation doesn't matter.

The voice of experience trumps the manual, then.  Listen to Cagey - he knows what he's talking about.

I'd be pissed if it didn't work well, because I seriously prefer those knobs. They're just the right size, they're easy to turn even with your pinky and a firm-turning pot, they aren't ostentatious at all and they come in all the usual finishes. Lets all my guitar's controls feel the same to me.

Now that I think about it (and went and checked the pictures), I put those knobs on Quty Pie! PAY ATTENTION! (raps knuckles with yard stick) <grin>

I was pretty sure I'd supplied solid shaft pots - but if I misremember, I haven't had occasion to refresh my recollection by dissassembling your fine workmanship.

Yeah.  I second what Cagey said. I had no experience with them and it took some effort to get the things where they would turn without a very noticeable wobble.  I'm the end, I did exactly what Cagey recommended and there's no wobble at all.

With my deflicted brane I couldn't swear to it in a court of law, but that's a carved-top body which requires a long shaft pot. If you bought them from Warmoth, they're certainly split/splined shaft parts.

It's quite easy to injure a split/splined shaft with a set screw. I use the set screw as my position indicator.
The position indicator on my strat is the bridge pickup screw as it lives right next to the stock position for volume. (those other two knobs just sit there and look pretty)

Yeah, I really don't know why I have knobs for the tone control at all.  I know I'm supposed to roll off some of the treble when I'm sitting on the bridge pickup, but I don't.

Oh and my split shafts are definitely all buggered up from multiple attempts to get the knobs straight but hell, they're perfect now and who's gonna see the shafts.

I've gotten to where I only use a single tone knob on most of my guitars (which I leave at 11), and finally eliminated it altogether on the last build. I just don't use it, so why clutter things up? Plus, dumping it reduces the load on the pickup(s), so it actually sounds better. At least, to me.
