question about burst finishing

I know there have to be a million threads on how to finish a guitar, but there are way too many to search through. So on to my question, how do i finish a strat to have a burst on it? Im talking a vintage burst, like on real Fender strats.

Here are a couple of ways to do it with rattle cans.  I'm currently experimenting with the raised template technique from projectguitar and it's turning out ok.

Modify your searches to look up Tonar's work on this board.  His are drop dead gorgeous and true to the vintage look.

+1 to the above posts, but I'll add - do you really want to try a burst with your first finish?  That's a pretty hard finish to do!

im going to try it on a piece alder from the nearby woodshop first to get a feel for it.

Give me a few days and I'll try to post picks....I'm trying to fix a ding that I found today on the outer edge and had to sand back the dark part of the burst a bit.  It'd look like crap if I put up a picture right now.  Hopefully I can pull this repair off...if not...sanding back....dang it.
