Your paying for the prestige when buying a Gibson.

Toyota, Lexus. Same cars (yes they are), one is just considered to be "high end" with better components and craftsmanship which brings the higher price tag.

The premium you pay for a Lexus may not be proportional, considering it's the same base car. But, as you say, there are better components and craftsmanship involved. That's not the case with Gibson vs. Carvin/Agile/Warmoth/others. You're only getting the same thing, and sometimes less, but paying several times as much. If it was just a 20% bump for the name, that would be "prestige". But when it's 3 to 10 times as much, there's something fundamentally wrong.

In the 1950's you would have been paying for prestige, today you are paying for the CEO's sons coke habit, his wifes  plastic surgeons and shopping sprees, and a million dollar a year motgage....
