Alright so I'm condensing things and starting a new thread... to make it all... official.   :laughing7:

This is "Project SuperGrover II", a lefty Goldtop SG ("SG" stands for "SuperGrover"... no wait, it doesn't really but I'd like to think so).

I will add the occasional update here and there.

Real-life example (mine will not have a Bigsby; a TOM instead):

1st step is ordering up some custom pickups from fellow board member (another board, that is) Jeff.

www.highorderpickups.com

Gonna have him wind me up what I call "The Lizardbucker"; bridge & neck:

- left handed
- asymmetric wind
- 50mm spacing
- zebra coils
  - black bobbin (adjustable poles)
  - cream/ivory bobbin (slugs)
- AlNiCo 2 magnets
- 42 gauge, plain enamel wire
- 4-conductor (for splitting etc)
- Bridge DC Ohms:  ~ 8.1k
- Neck DC Ohms: ~ 7.2k
- unpotted
- Silver braid wire covering
- Nickel covers (polished)
- extra "magic smoke" LOL

They're essentially old-school PAF clones.

Sounds awesome. Just out of curiosity, why zebra coils and nickel covers?

The zebra covers imbue a mystical quality to the sound that only true tone Gods can hear.  :icon_jokercolor:

But in all seriousness, this sounds like a sweet build  :headbang:

Super Grover? You do realize that Sesame Street is one of the corner stones of the liberal agenda (and is on PBS). I think you should have stayed with the green glitter and called it Oscar The Marxist Grouch. Would have been perfect. But I do have to admit that the goldtop idea is super awesome and brilliant. :laughing7:

Aside from the Tone Gods explanation put forth... it's just in case I ever want to take the covers off.  :icon_jokercolor:

The Super Grover moniker goes way way back to the late 80's... with my first SG. A good buddy of mine named
it "Super Grover" back then.  I eventually sold it.  This of course is "Super Grover II".  So, it's more a tradition
thing than sesame street.

EDIT:

Gots more hardware research to do...

Meantime, these will be the tuners:

Gotoh 3x3 Vintage Style Keys Cream Buttons:

I'm kinda diggin the gold metallic with the Big's.... :blob7:

Maybe do an all mahogany neck and body, with gold metallic or sparkle with clear sides and back.... :dontknow:

this is going to be an awesome project! what about an all gold guitar with a natural binding? or gold top, natural masked binding, and a dyed red back?

So far the plan is:

- Goldtop Gold top

- Transparent Brown/Clear on the back & neck

- 24 3/4" conversion neck, Gibson peghead (Pro only)

- Bound neck (ivory/cream)

- Gloss black peghead top

- Trapezoid inlays

Mahogany body, mahogany neck, prolly rosewood fretboard.

The PAF-vintage-style pickups and Pro-style truss rod will balance the warm woods.

I did trans-red on mine on the recommendation of someone from Warmoth and I think it was the wrong choice. It looks kind of unique though since I've never seen a guitar with a gold top and a red back... but again totally up to you. If I had it to do again I would have gone with trans-brown. I'd also probably go with Ebony to brighten it up a little more.

edit - I tried to get a picture of my guitar but the trans-red color is impossible to take a picture of with a flash. It looks totally different from the way it usually looks. I'll try to get a picture outside.

edit - tried outside and that didn't help much. I can't seem to get a picture that capture what it really looks like.

it's a very deep almost blood red. when it photographs it looks lighter than it really looks - -the bright flash or sunlight brightens it up a lot

like this picture:

gtback.jpg

that is with the flash and it doesn't really look like that to me. the picture looks lighter and more toward a sort of orange-y red than it looks in normal light. It actually looks more like an actual candied apple color and it really quite beautiful looking. Just posting this so you know what you're getting. The above picture make it look like you can see the wood a lot more - but that's the effect of the bright flash. You really don't notice the grain as much. The flash brings that out and it's really not an accurate depiction of the way it looks in normal light. I like how it is, but for a more traditional look I'd go with brown or clear. The red probably looks better with a sunburst.

edit again - my camera just can't capture the color. I've given up.

Looks like an awesome build plan, but I'd probably do vintage tint on the back instead of trans red. And I would get at least a bit of wax into those pickups since this will need to be played very loud.

My mistake - I put red instead of brown in my listing.  The original 50's GTs have brown-ish backs.

The red looks groovy too, however.

EDIT:  crikey, clear or trans brown - whatever the hell finish it is they used on the original GTs.  LOL

trust me the red doesn't look anything like that picture.

Oh yes loud, but unpotted is the only way to go for myself.  I don't use a ton of gain/dist anyways.

The Seths I've been using are also unpotted.

This project has been put on hold.  It will be done in the future.

You see, I've got a feva... and the only prescription... is a Firebird...

The only question is, "where the F do I get a neck?"

how about: http://www.warmoth.com/Pages/ClassicShowcase.aspx?Body=1&Shape=62&Path=Neck,Misc,Firebird
