Ok - I finally went ahead and "Stratified" my formerly humbucked Warmoth strat.  My reasons are varied, but I always wanted a true "strat" single coil sound, even though my band's sound requires buckers.  Anyway, I got 3 Dimarzio noiseless single coil style pickups.  I got the Area '61 in the Neck position, the VV Blues in the middle, and the Solo Pro in the bridge.  These all sound fantastic, and are truly noiseless.  They also "quack" like a "real" strat should.  Anyway, I will play them for a couple days and then post a more complete review.

It is hard getting used to the strat sound, however, compared to my humbucking guitars.  I tend to play it completely differently.

i personaly think single coils have a place even in really hard rock music. they cut through really well and bark nicely. most of my guitars are humbucking but its cool to play a hot single every once and a while. i love them. just give them a chance and like you said i play and mute them alittle different than the hums

What overdrive/distortion pedal works well to get a "heavy" sound without breaking up the note too much?  I got them to make it sound like a strat, but if I wanted to cut a little more like a bucker, which pedals work well?

I consider the Pi a fuzzbox more than a distortion. You might want to try a Tubescreamer.

the best pedal ive ever seen is a xotic bb preamp go to thier web page and check it out these are by far the best stomp box ever built they do not change the tone of your guitar or amp at all these are amazimg i  cant say enough about them they are pricey but well worth it watch the review vids

click on the pedals all three are nice but the bb is alot more versital it can just be a true  booster or gain pedal or combos of both ive owned lots of gain/boost pedals and this is the only one that sounds good on every guitar/amp combo ive ever tried it on it has a seperate bass and trebel and gain and boost  did i say these are awsome check it out.

I agree with you. It's the most transparent pedal I have ever heard. I use it for cleans & drive, very versatile booster/OD pedal and my favorite so far.

Check these pedals too: http://www.tonefreak.com/Abunai2.html
I have the Abunai 2 and use it when I want more drive than BB has. It belongs to the tube screamer family, only more versatile with a 3 mode switch.
Check also the Keeley modified Boss Blue Driver. I liked these samples a lot http://www.steelbender.com/spotlightkeeleycomp.html#audio

Kostas - I appreciate the mention!

There are lots more sound clips on my site for anyone who is interested.

One of my other favorites has been the TIMMY pedal by Paul Cochrane and the COT50 by Lovepedal... both work well with singles and provide some nice tonal goodness.
