Post what you're listening to!

As long as we're doing Xmas music, here's The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker.  Filtered through a Roy Buchanan sensibility, of course.  Mayfly, as a telecaster maven you may find this gratifying.

Well, some of you no doubt know that there's a current sea-shanty trend on TikTok, which has led me to seek out the genuine article, which in turn led me back to famed Canadian bass Stan Rogers, whose short life yielded some glorious songs of the sea.  Many thanks to Mayfly whose mention of Stan somewhere on these forums led me to explore his work some years back.

The Sea Shanty thing is interesting.

A couple years ago I had a months long fascination with them and other work songs (The blues evolved out of work songs of the fields).
I suspect work songs are possibly one of the oldest forms of music--after the lullaby to soothe a baby, and the laments for mourning the dead.

Indeed.  Virtually all of rock'n'roll owes its existence to the work songs of enslaved Africans kidnapped to the American south, especially as cross-bred with the spiritual hymns of their captors.  Even the stuff that is extremely and explicitly NOT blues-based arises out of a tradition that seeks to transcend or reject that origin and as such occupies a dialectic role with respect to the country and urban blues that led to jazz and rock music.

Stan still fills me with awe.  But it is typically Canadian to not enshrine someone or something.  We tend to take these wonderful things for granted and shrug them off.  Or lampoon them in a silly manner:

The next three songs I'm learning ...

Not so sure about the version of I shall be released, but the recent mention of this on another thread made me look it up.  And Dancing in the Moonlight, the story behind it is horrific, but I always liked the band King Harvest especially since they're from New York State.  And then there's Neil Young ...  I like this guys drumming.
Story behind Dancing in the Moonlight for those who don't know, it makes it all that much more beautiful

People should try to celebrate the positive.  There's too much negativity celebrated.
