Its more of a shrink in, and yes all finishes shrink to some degree. Finishes like lacquer and shellac do it to a greater degree, since they are evaporative finishes, where solvents escape for the finish to dry. Most urethanes cure by oxidation (or by chemical catalyzation) and will shrink, but much less.
