hi,
i have stained a mahogany body with deep mahogany stain (oil based).
the plan is to put a wash coat of shellac sealer (1 part shellac and 2 or 3 parts denaturated alcohol).
i read that the purpose of this is
1 -  to protect the mahogany stain from any colour bleed from the oil based dark filler i want to apply
2 -  let only the pored of the wood to be filled and coloured by the filler

my concern is that if i thin the filler with white spirit to make it easier to spread and handle, the white spirit is going to affect the shellac and make the colour of the filler bleed through the layer of shellac and "contaminate" the mahogany stain.

what can i do to avoid this ?

thanks

You are right on target so far with your method.

White Spirit?  I use Benzene to thin oil base paste filler. There are alot of names for Benzene so if the White Spirit smells like lighter fluid or white gas it is close to the same thing. I think the only thing you need to worry about with the shellac is Alcohol.

To be sure do a test on a piece of scrap wood you will know right away.

i have tried it on a test piece of mahogany.
the white spirit doesn`t affect the sealer, it just make the bloody oil filler lighter in colour.
i wish black wood filler or black oil based stains existed in the UK.
i can only find ebony ones that are not black at all but a crappy grey which looks horrible on the mahogany stained in mahogany and maybe even worse eventually on the koa top.

does anyone know if i could use oil paints, universal colours or something else compatible with the oil filler to make it black?

If you're using oil based filler, you should be able to color it with a universal dye concentrate. Go check out a paint store that sells/mixes enamel paints, they would have to have the concentrates to mix/match colors and might sell you some.

Not having easy access to the benzene that Tonar suggests I thinned my oil based filler with a little lacquer thinner; that worked OK, but not knowing what filler product you're using, test thinning a little bit and apply to your test board.

i tried mixing some of that ebony oil wood filler with a real black artists` oil colour.
i really have to say that it worked well, i didn`t need a lot of it because it`s got a high pigment content.
the colour of the filler is now black,
just perfect...
