Pinecaster Tele!

After building the RD-ish thing for my brother's birthday, I was able to sit down with him & talk about getting him exactly what he wanted, rather than building a type of guitar I knew he didn't already have.  He ended up giving me two of his current herd - a Fender 70's strat with a few pickup mods, and a stock 72 Telecaster re-issue - to sell & raise the cash for the parts. I also too some measurements of all his guitars, talked over his preferences & came up with the perfect neck: standard thin Tele, 1 piece (Vintage modern construction), 6105 frets, reverse headstock.  It showed up 2 days ago.   :toothy12:

For the body, I've wanted to work with Pine.  I came across a book on the history of Fender at the library, and read about the initial prototypes being made out of pine.  A bit of googling later, I was convinced that it would be perfect to get the lightweight feel & balanced sound he was after.  I got one from Jim of Pine Guitar bodies, after some shopping around.  There's several pine body builders out there, but Jim got back to me first, was super courteous & quick.  And way closer to reasonable on the cost scale.  I'll be staining it a bit darker - something brown to dark tan - then doing a clear gloss over that.  Haven't nailed down the exact method, but research is underway.

The pickups will be Duncans: Lil' 59 Tele bridge, and a stacked P-90 for the neck. I haven't got the pickup yet, but the online info says it's taller & requires a deeper rout than normal.  Not being sure exactly how much deeper, I had Jim leave a little room to dremel out at the bottom.  Going all black on the hardware & pickguard.

Sadly, winter means I'm stuck in the house to do most of the work, so progress will be slow until I figure out how I can get the finish done, but pics as I go.

I've been pining over a pine Tele (get it?) for a little while now, so I'm both excited about this build and a little peeved that you beat me to the punch. What you did with the "RD-ish thing" was really very cool, and I'm sure this will be no different. Can't wait to see how it pans out!  :icon_thumright:

This is very exciting! I can't wait to hear what you think about the pine, would love to have a pinecaster myself.
In fact, I have a pine body lying around for almost a year now... I think this should be my next project!

Nice Job on going outside the box, the best thing is the guitar will have an amazing scent  :icon_jokercolor:

Better watch out with that, before you know it you'll pine needles and pine cones all over the place....It's a mess....

Isn't pine a bit soft for a guitar body. Would love to hear some tone samples when your done.

I'm pretty sure this CMI faker I used to own was made of pine. It was super, super light.
