so my friend is stationed at pine gap near alice spring austrailia(maybe i shouldn't have told you that), he cant talk much about it but this is not about that.

he is a guitar player and isn't satisfied with the cover band he plays in. i wonder if anyone here is near alice springs and might know where he can find other musicians that love american blues.

i guess nobody here is near alice springs australia?
that explains it, i looked on google maps and there is like one hwy that goes through alice springs, all the other roads that connect to it end at the borders of the northern territory, truely in the center of nothing!

Slap bang in the middle of the Australian continent, smallish town from what I've heard....... the yacht races on the Todd River are something to watch. :icon_thumright: And when you are up in the Northern Territory you really have to drink a  stubby.... :eek:ccasion14:

I think you'd be more likely to find some into Country music up that way, than blues tbh.

Dunno the size of the US contingent strength up round there....there's Pine Gap and Nurrungar keeping service folks busy from the little I've been told (my prev, job in the Aust Fed Govt had term postings for the Pine Gap Station, and folks returning from there ahd to be careful about they said about the place) - that's all I know! :dontknow: - but maybe some service folks could get together on their days off and jam around til they get something serious going?

my understanding is that pine gap is the area 51 of australia.
there are only a few hundred troops there.
part of the base is underground with only satalite antennas visable on the surface.
his mail must not contain rank or any type of military insgnia
and when i asked him about the base he sent me to wikipedia as that is all he can say about it and a google search is likely to give you stories about aliens and ufo's and government cover ups.
i know he is an intel analyst so i'm satisfied that it is a signal receiving station and not a place that houses our alien leaders or a crashed ufo or any other nonsense.

well anyway i guess he'll have to learn to finger pick and figure out some country licks he's gonna be there for some time

AFAIK, and without breaking any Australian Laws pertaining to my past employment (s.70 Commonwealth Crimes Act), I guess that Pine Gap is part of the global signal processing systems that the USA utilises.

I never worked there, but did work with people who did on Term Postings (3 yr. terms).

Most of them loved Alice Springs and the surrounding environment, as it is a unique place to live and so much different to where you usually hail from . But the isolation of the town from anywhere else, can be a problem to those that hail from very urban envirnoments, things are not so readily available and Alice's isolation can play havoc to families that have a family member stationed there on Term Posting. Relationships can suffer too, while although one partner may be earning a fortune in all sorts of extra Allowances etc. the other partner's career is on hold as employment (and in the case of family members of US personnel, may be prohibted from working under immigration laws?) is hard to find.  It must be emphasised that it is a decent commercial flight to anywhere that resembles a city (Darwin or Adelaide are smallish Cities but urban enough for those wanting their Lattes and muffins!), and I was told that some things can be frighteningly expensive in Alice because of the transportation costs to get them there.

If the Posting is approached properly by the family unit it can expose them to a lifestyle that is quite different to what they'll experience in the future. But if you have a kid who resents the move or a wife who begrudges becoming a housewife instead of persuing her career as a lawyer like she did back home, then there could be trouble.

There is, however, a distinct need to keep a high security awareness both while at work and away from it, even years after you leave there, mostly because folks are damed curious about the place and will ask you stupid questions that you either don't know the answer to, or you can't talk about. In that respect, your friend, in working there, should consider themself a very highly regarded person by their Govt. to be stationed there.

Pine Gap was built during the Cold War, and it's uses have been subject to all sorts of conjecture and protests from various groups within Australia. At one stage, in 1975, it was alleged that Pine Gap had a hand in relaying messages that bypassed the Australian Govt.'s eyes and helped to bring about the downfall of the then Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam , who was not a fan of the base (he was against it because he believed it made Australia a nuclear target in the event of full scale war.). In those very Cold War days it might well have been a designated target by the Communists, who knows? :dontknow:

You are right in paralleling Pine Gap to the US's Area 51. That's because of the tight security - which is essential, and something I firmly uphold their (US and Australian Govts) right to have. But shady shenanigans and disappearing aliens etc. that is part of the infamy of Area 51, is not the case here.

maybe it's not universal across austrailians but if you do a google search you will find alot of people that do believe that pine gap is involved in alien cover ups. i personally can clearly see that there are a bunch of antennas, we had similar equipment when i was stationed with him in misawa japan, ofcoarse there is no secret research into advanced propulsion systems or crashed alien crafts. i know why there is secrecy, there is secrecy in his field anywhere he goes, it is part of the job of finding signals and targets and such. this just happens to be a base that is entirely secret so he brings the burdens home with him. it's interesting you mention the family burdens because that is a lot of what we have been talking about lately, it is hard on his wife who doesn't speak english well and accents other than american may be harder for her to understand as it is not what she is used to. no sense in me relaying an anonymous persons personal life so ill stop there.
well it's not likely he'll find a jam partner anytime soon, but thanks for reading sharing and showing a general interest.
:eek:ccasion14: cheers

Dan, being a communications set up of some sort would explain the antennas and the electronics buildings, so Pine Gap would be no different to many other such stations strategically placed around the world by the USA.

If his wife is having probs with the Aussie accent out there, I can't offer any solutions other than for her to listen to the local radio and watch the TV more. She should be able to pick up the variations in the accent better after being drowned in the Aussie strine on talkback radio!  :laughing7:

exactly my view point, i only bring up the alien stuff because i find it hilarious. i mean nobody asks why misawa has a radio antenna the size of a football stadium, the reason is that there isn't much secrecy there. it is a joint forces base shared between japan and america. i can't tell you the primary mission of the base, but it isn't anything unusual. most of the personnel were pilots and mechanics and other not so secretive personnel. nobody asks questions when there are non secret operations going on in the foreground. people are naturally curious when things aren't known and will fill in the blanks as there imaginations see fit. pine gap has no non secret operations, it has only one purpose and a few people can't wrap there heads around that. with the american government secrets dont mean that they a really that big of a secret.

as far as home life for him, it's the first time his wife is away from japan. an american going to asia living on an american base has it easy, they are surounded by americans, it took him a while to realize that his wife was haveing a hard time. she looks different, she can't speak fluently. the only place she can be comfortable is at home when he is home. and he comes home stressed and unhappy which makes thing worse for the both of them. if he could find a jam partner it might make things easier, i know she love to watch him play.

Beware the probe!

Being a male over 40 I tend to suspect that the aliens have managed to make this essential research that they carry out for their world, a more sinister and covert operation these days.

In the 1950s, when the first anecdotal eveidence came to light, it was reported that the aliens would merely snatch their research subject off the streeet and do as they wanted to the soul, then leave him feeling violated in the most vile way and completely confused.
Nowadays, that procedure is carried out by the aliens masquerading as your local Doctor and the procedure is disguised as a 'prostate check'! They have even infiltrated Govt. health services , who now strongly advocate the 'check' as one of the many humiliations that older men must undergo once they reach 40..... :laughing8:
