and if there is a figuring in the maple, it won't be as visible, while a finish will enhance the figuring...

Not true for birdseye, figuring becomes more prominant with usage.... :icon_biggrin:

I think that's true for all figuring. But, it takes time, while a finish brings it out immediately and the appearance doesn't change over time/usage other than perhaps a darkening from the finish itself aging.
