And you can get plastic or chrome mounting rings:

They also generally have a bunch of installation information available. You can start by going to the "Details" under the item description and then selecting "Instructions".
No.... He doesn't NEED...
He can use, and probably SHOULD if want a vintage look... But there is nothing that obligues him to use it... I'm not sure if I'll use it on my L5S
Vintage is what I'm going for, so thanks guys that answers everything. I'm going to go for a chrome metal mounting ring with chrome covers, should look good.

Cream is nice but I have a lot of that on my Les Paul now. This hollowbody is going to be all wood and chrome. One more question - If I'm planning on installing this metal mounting ring from Warmoth- http://www.warmoth.com/hardware/parts/parts.cfm?fuseaction=include_mounting_rings do I need to mount that on top of one of their plastic rings or can I just use a metal one? Also, what are the "Blade switch, pickup mounting" screws for? Do I need to buy these in addition to the 4 mounting screws included or are they just extras?
Those pure chrome ones are pretty nice. I'll consider that over the plastic/chrome. Wood could be nice too, I thought about having wooden knobs but decided against it because I'm going for concentric pots. The build is going to be an L5 hollowbody, 2 f holes, no pickguard. 2 humbuckers, body and neck are maple with rosewood top, headstock veneer and fretboard.
