"Pickguard" for use when creating wiring harness

I am about to start building the wiring harness for my Tele build, which has rear rout and strat controls (1V/2T/3 Way Switch). I loosely measured on a thin "board" where the controls go but am not sure how to cut the slot for the the switch. Does anyone know how to do this, or can anyone chime in on what is normally done to create the wiring harness? Thanks!

is your board essentially cardboard?  Why not just use a utility knife?  Does not have to be pretty - just has to hold the switch...

Sort of, it is a bit more hard than cardboard though. It is from the packing that my coffee roasting machine came in. Sort of like thin particle board panels that fit all around the sides of the packing box the roaster came in.
