Pickguard for a Gecko

OK, this is totally my own wild hair and does not represent Warmoth interests/ideas in any way.

The Gecko body is not designed for a pickguard.  But what if one was available?  How would it look?  Got any ideas?

I'm picturing something Stingray-like, and it looks good in my head... In reality? :laughing11: I don't know. Maybe its just because I really really want a Stingray Warmoth.

No reason to cover up a nice body with a sheet of plastic when Leo Fender didn't tell us that it's the way the instrument is supposed to look, like he did with other body styles that Warmoth sells a lot of. :dontknow:

I concur, most times the gecko's are really nice looking. Don't see a reason to hide them behind a PG. But on opaque colors such as the black it could look good with the right PG shape.. :dontknow:

Best I could come up with:

I really like this.

I don't look at a PG as a necessity, but more as simply part of the overall aesthetic of a guitar. With the right combination of colours and materials, sometimes it just works.

Regardless of appearance, I really like pickguards and top-routed guitars because they make it so much easier to change the layout.

Decided you want more or fewer knobs or switches? Want humbuckers instead of single coils? All you need to do is get a new pickguard.

I guess that's irrelevant if you already know exactly what layout you want your guitar to have and you're certain you'll never change your mind (or can afford a new body if you do.)

Warwick recently released the Steve Bailey Signature bass.  It has a funky p/g on it and is partially what caused me to think about the Gecko.  I'm not crazy about it, but it made me think......

I think the upper horn is what makes a pg really not look right on a Gecko or that Warwick.  Its too narrow to fit a decent sized section, and yet its a large enough area that it looks odd if left uncovered.

Is that the one with the snakewood fingerboard?
It's confuzzling why anyone would want a snakewood fingerboard, let alone in a mass-produced instrument. :icon_scratch:

He had another company, too... I suspect its because he's really not known except to bass players. Bass players will drop some fairly large money on a bass, but it seems less signature/fanboi driven and more "how-many-knobs" driven. What really drives the signature guitar sales is lawyers and dentists and such, and they don't want to be bass players. Steve Bailey's signature gimmick of sliding harmonics can only appeal to other bassists who wanna be stars, because as soon as you do it - where's the bass line? At least Victor Wooten can push the band and play party tricks at the same time.

I'm not familiar with his catalog of work, but I liked the 6 string Jazz Bass because I like the 4 and 5 string Jazz Bass.  I agree about these switch and knob things with bass players.  They'd put a 32 band EQ on the bass if they could.  That's why his 6 string Jazz Bass made sense.  Adding an extra string or 2 didn't suddenly make it a mixing board with neck that is played so high it chokes you.

I don't know about a PG for a Gecko, but a carved top would be cool.  Approaching it like the carved top tele, where you're remove material rather that start out with a thicker blank.

I'm sure some folk wouldn't mind the weight reduction and it would provide more of a 3-D vibe to it when using Unique Choice tops.

I agree - a nice oval-shaped pickguard that doesn't come too close to the neck pocket would look ideal on a Gecko body.  I've been thinking about doing one of these for a while.  :)

I reckon you're onto a winner here. With a similar carved back side ala a Warwick Thumb bass that sits nicely on a portly mans beer gut.
