Needing some suggestions ...

I've not really been into that much heavy music, particularly post 90's—I would describe my taste as more along the lines of blues/rock, with a bit of grunge and pop thrown in for good measure. But VDoP is one of my all time favorite albums. Was listening to it this morning and it still blows me away (even if the drum sounds are a bit dated).

Using this album as a bench mark can anyone suggest current bands/albums that I might like? I'm wanting to stretch myself both from a listening perspective and to try and learn some new chops.

Appreciate any thoughts  :party07:

Not directly, but I've found some neat bands via last.fm and pandora (its been a while since I listened to pandora thought.)

Go put it on Pantera radio and see what else pops up.

Ummmmmmmm.

Metallica, Megadeth....for starters.

But Pantera is awesome, besides SRV, one of the best bands to come outta Dallas...

Good idea swarfrat  :icon_thumright:

Thanks for the input so far folks.

*Metallica, yes. Familiar with Black album, Puppets and Justice. what I've heard of their more recent stuff I didn't really dig.
*Megadeath, will check them out Doug. Any particular album?
*Avenged Sevenfold. What I've heard (I think it's called 'City of Evil') is more like a souped up version of Iron Maiden. Very theatrical, high vocals, widdly-widdly guitars doing almost baroque type lines. Not what I'm looking for (would rather listen to Maiden).
*Atreyu. Don't know them, will have a look.

What I like about Pantera is the groove-metal thing. Any current bands doing that sort of thing that you like?

Keep 'em coming  :icon_thumright:

Well can't really put a finger on a particular album, but I have a list of my fav song's.

Peace Sells
Trust
Angry Again
99 Ways to Die
Sweating Bullets
Symphony of Destruction
Train of Consequences
A Tout Le Monde
Wake up Dead
Hanger 18
Skin o My Teeth
Almost honest

just to name a few... :headbang1:

:headbang1:  Cool sh*t!!  :headbang1:
So, an album is coming Marko? Nice ....

... still kinda old school though ... not in a bad way, but just not really the same kinda vibe as Pantera.

I've only recently started getting into Megadeth. Mustaine's voice always turned me off, but I finally just listened to the music, and realized it's pretty damn good. He's got some great tones as well. He's certainly won the battle with Metallica when it comes to staying true to his roots. Of course, he hasn't had record sales anywhere near those guys... but at least he hasn't released an awful collaboration with Lou Reed.  :icon_jokercolor:

Not bad, not really my cup-o-tea, great musicians but the music is kinda pedestrian. Portnoy is the shyt tho,  he's probably one of the top 3 drummers on the planet...

Hey Stew, you might check out Seven Dust, they're kick ass.. :headbang1:

and GodSmack..

Stop looking. There's nothing like Pantera. They are the Metal version of Van Halen. Rex and Vinnie were locked in so tight. They would just lay down the groove of thunder for Dime to shred over with Phil screaming on top. The only bad thing I can say is they had shitty tatse in sports teams :icon_jokercolor:

It's fortunate for us you don't live in our wonderful state anymore...

I´d say the debut of Machine Head "Burn my Eyes".
Realeased a few years later, but still from the same era.

You might check out Crowbar and also Anselmos other band Down (especially "Nola").

and GodSmack..
Yeah Doug ... now that's what I'm talkin' 'bout. Those Sevendust clips ROCK  :headbang:
Heavy, but got the groove thing goin' on. Good production too.

What I saw of Godsmack on YouTube was pretty good, but rhythmically it's a lot straighter than those Sevendust clips. Same with Machine Head. Cool stuff but seems very straight. I can only listen to double kicks at 200bpm for a very short period of time  :binkybaby:

Compared to this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bp9yHjLAUfU
Start with the machine-gun stuff but there's two other kick-ass grooves before the vocal even kicks in  :headbang1:

Ok, so if I like Pantera & Sevendust what else would you recommend?

...and thanks!

Ya, Seven Dust kicks ass, Lajon's got some great vocals.. :party07:

What about Clutch? They've definitely got the groove thing down pat. Check out "Electric Worry" and "1010011011" or whatever that song is called.  Ribonucleic acid freakout!  :headbang:

Also, "widdly-widdly guitars"? Best music term I've ever heard.

I like the Roadrunner United album. It's a 30 year tribute to the record label using various members of the bands that are/were signed.
Here's my favorite song "The Dagger"

How about Testament Practice What You Preach and Souls Of Black?  2 albums from the same era.

First up, gotta say you guys rock  :headbang:

Like I said I'm trying to get in touch with what's going on with current 'metal' bands, this journey being inspired by VDoP. I'm pretty out of touch with current stuff (in all genres), for example my 'metal' collection currently ends with Metallica/Sepultura/Pantera.

All the stuff you've posted is v.cool. There's not one thing that I've checked out that I don't like on some level, so thanks  :icon_thumright:

Ok, some specifics:
*Clutch. I likey. I dunno if I'd put em in the same camp as Pantera but I'll definitely be checking out more of their stuff.

@AutoBat. Good call on the Roadrunner United album. Looks like an amazing project and one worthy of anyone's collection. Gotta get me some ...

*Testament. Very cool, but more old school than what I'm looking for. One of the things I really liked about Sevendust is that the production is el'schmicko tasty!

@Kuro Uma. Throwdown are pretty cool but from the two clips posted there was nothing ground breaking for me at least. Will check out more of their stuff and see if something inspires. Now your band, that's another thing all together! Have you guys released anything? It's way cool.  :headbang1:
