I've been getting a lot better results with the 3M finishing pads (scotchbrite in different grades) than sandpaper for smoothing. Yes, levelling works better with paper and a hard block (or a razor blade) - but I don't get the sand through with the pads. I decided to try a palm sander instead of doing all this by hand, but my dad's old palm sander doesn't really open enough to take the big thick finishing pads. It seem to work OK with just the rubber pad gripping, but I suspect it'd work a lot better and go faster if I could lock it down to the pad.

Anyone have input on a sander that can open enough to take these pads, observations on the use of the pads vs other finishing methods, or the like? This poor thing is already used up - part of the reason the jaws won't fully open.
