when you apply truoil on a body is it to :

paint the body

or

work it into the wood

or

to polish the wood?

just trying to get a feel of what i should aim for.

Kind of, it still needs polishing like any finish.

can't you either check the finish FAQ or just open one 'many tru oil questions' topic,  rather than to spam the board with new topics for every little question?
