I went to Sherwin Williams to have a special mix made for my Telecaster I'm going to build. And the reason the stain was so bad it was mix with the wrong base coat.Burn #2 for me on my build the first was I order a Telecaster three hole bridge plat and got some off the wall something it's not for a Telecaster at all it's going back Monday morning I hope I get my money back on it too I'll find out soon I hope. And I am going back to see if I can get the stain mix with the right base coat this time around.Talk about bad luck to kick off my build.Yes I am a little piss off but I'll get over it some day.It just cost me more for all the running around I have to do. :(

I was not aware that Sherwin Williams sold anything suitable for guitar finishing. What exactly did you buy?

You can take their base tints and mix them with lacquer thinner to use to dye. Problem is finding a store that will bother with selling you small quantities...

They make just about any kind of finish you can imagine. But, most of what you see in the retail market is household-type stuff, which you're right - you wouldn't use for guitars. The various lacquers and polyurethanes you would use are sold more to the commercial markets like automotives/marine/aerospace.

I have the minwax water base stain but they use the wrong base for it.If I can get them to remix it for me for free I'll give it another shot. The color I like is Antique Jade I love this color with a cream pick guard I think it will look good.

:hello2:  Well I went back to Sherwin Williams and they did re mix it for me for free.Came back home don't a test on some maple wood. And man does it look nice. This is going to be a fun build now that I have the right color of stain. My guitar will be the Telecaster Thinline with a F hole.I did a re search on guitar stain and found a lot of people was using Minwax water base stain there is a guy online that showed how to do it from start to finish. This was the reason I went to Sherwin Williams to get the color stain. Now I am happy.  :occasion14: Now if anyone here can tell me where I can get 2000+ wet/dry sandpaper I have from 220 up to 1500 in wet/dry now.I got them at you guess it Walmart lol.So I'm cheap... Not sure if I told all what color it will be it's Antique Jade I think with the pick guard I have on order it will look good but who am I to say.As long as I like it.I'm going to be pretty happy with all said and done.  :cool01:

Thanks I'll call a few in the morning.

Rockler sales a product called micro mesh. comes in a pack and starts at 1200 and goes to 12000 in 9 different grits

Those are useful and effective, but I wouldn't (and don't) use them to level out a finish. Wrong range, too small and too expensive. They're much better used on frets.
