if one would like to start playing guitar, we know you need a guitar, amp, patch cable, and tuner.

now what if you want to be a singer? what do you need?

The basics are:

1 - one SM58 Mic, XLR cable, and mic stand if you are so inclined.
2 - one 8 channel (or so) powered mixer or PA head.  300W+300W should do the trick.  Don't worry about on-board effects - they'll just muddy up things.
3 - a pair of front of house speakers
4 - at least one high quality monitor speaker

Better systems can be had by increasing the quality of these components.  Or you can do what I did and chuck it all and get bose L1 systems.  BTW - Just sold my  powered mixer (12 channel, 1000W) for about $600.

All of this stuff you can get second hand.  If you get that '58 used I'd give it a good spray of Lysol though...

The ability to actually sing, phrasing, emotion, ability to count, understand music more than a casual listener, then...MAYBE a Shure SM58, a mic stand of your choice, and at least one lengthy XLR cable.

I've always been a fan lf these guys. This little mixer should be fine to start:

You mean what equipment to play live or just 'what do you need to sing'?
Vocal cords, teeth, lips, tongue and a working set of lungs are all definite musts. A sense of pitch and some training will definitely help most people A LOT. You can start just by singing scales and intervals along with your acoustic. Try to anticipate the notes and see how high / low you can go and still have power.
Singing along with your music in the car is actually not good practice.

I'm definately of the school of thought of

MAYBE an SM58

guys at the local pro audio store should be willing to help you find the right fit.  My wife uses a Wireless Senheisser, but if 1500 dollars for a microphone is a bit too steep (and over the top) for you then consider they have normal handhelds of the same thing.

an SM58 will be somewhere aroun 150 dollars depending on where you get it for a brand new one (recommended.. new i mean. not 2nd hand)  but its possible you can find one for a deal somewhere.

Personally I picked up one of these: http://www.equationaudio.com/mics/dominion-handheld-mics.php?object=dsv7 for 50 bucks during a promotion at Mother Music and I think it kills the SM58.. thats just me though, and you can get them from around 70 - 100 dollars full price.  I also have a couple SM57s for micing my amps, but my drummer loves singing through those.  Try everything out, different brands too.

also I agree with STDC... stay away from behringer when it comes to things that output power.  Their mixers are a really great bang for your buck, but stay away from anything that says watts on it.

The SM58 (and 57) are both good enough.  There are better sounding mics, but for the price and bulletproof nature of them, they can't be beat.  You've seen the presentation of the guy talking through an SM 58, stops and unplugs it, uses it to hammer in a nail, plugs it back in and finishes the presentation?

First you need to catch a case of L.S.D.  (lead singer disease)... like, instead of helping the band tear down after the gig, just walk around
with your mic in its case with a smug look.  You'll be well on your way to being a true singer then...   :toothy10:

I wouldn't even try to sing with anything less than a Neumann tube condesor mic, an LA-110 mic preamp and a set of the most expensive JBL Monitors made.
Failing that, you could always just play backup  for an amazing hottie female lead singer with her own $10,000 PA, and as a bonus, she could also cook and clean for you.

honestly i dont know if youre kidding, explaining your situation, or being serious. but thats why we love you.

+1 to the SM57/58. My band uses these for vocals. this is what you want if you are gonna abouse the equipment by taking it on the road. As far as the other stuff goes you could look in at the Carvin website. They have pre-made systems that go all the way from garage to arena size. even if you dont buy from them it'll give you an idea of what you need. My band also uses Carvin PA cabs. solid stuff.
