Legend has it that The Who were facing a Union ban and Roadies walking off the job if they ever turned up with the original Marshall 8x 12 stack again....one supposed reason why the 4 x 12 split stack was born by Marshall.

Having had to shuffle along narrow corridors, and up stairs with Marshall 4 x 12 cabs (without casters!), there's no way I'm going near something as big as that Crate cab.

400W is plain ridiculous (if it's measured in RMS  :sign13: ) for the average player, and even the stadium performers wouldn't want something like that roaring away on stage. In this day and age, the front row of fans would ahve a legal right to any injury caused to their hearing!

There's a reason (a very good one) why the Marshall 200w head and cabs were small in number - they weren't in demand!

Dunno bout you guys, but most venues I know of have a very strict noise pollution code to abide by, and if you turned up with that Crate - even the Half Stack - people wouldn't let you crank it past 2. It's usually easier to sneak some volume past the venue people if you turn up with a Vox AC30 , show them it's only 30 W & let it rip when need be. Even turning up with the usual 100W Marshall draws attention.

No offense, but who cares, it's an awesome site.....And moreover most likely just a novelty....... :headbang1:

No offence taken Dangerous. But gee, those Crates would cost an arm and a leg, and with an expense like that you'd really want to justify why you're getting something like that other than some sort of 'mine's larger than yours' approach.

I have also suffered permanent hearing damage by playing too loud on a 100w amp, and wouldn't wish the tinnitus I have, on anyone or the embarrassment of having to wear hearing aids.

You'd literally kill yourself with decibels before you got any of the good stuff from the power t00bs (pushin' the power t00bs is where the magic happens).

Although, Nigel Tufnel (the World's Loudest Guitarist) certainly must have some secret to this...

(True) Tone Tip:  Stick to small, low-powered amps/combos - then you can crank it and get those power t00bs saturating without killing yourself.  As well, avoid ones with Master Volumes if possible for full tone... even the best Master Volume circuits thin the tone out.  Besides, if you have a small, low-powered amp/combo, you don't need a Master Volume (the whole reason Master Volumes were put in amps was to get that "cranked amp" sound at lower volume levels - and it was a half-assed attempt).  :icon_thumright:

I agree with everything except "Master Volume circuits thin the tone out".  If you don't like the tone change from the master volume, leave it at 11  :headbang:

i thought dropped a was a seven string tuning

dropped usually means you tune the lowest string down a full step. If you're in standard tuning, dropped D would be the low E-string tuned down to D and the rest of the strings left the same.
