Old School guy needs advice

If these modelers, multi-fx pedals and other whiz-bang gadgets were so doggone great, the t00b amp would cease to exist. - that's right, just as soon as any competing system comes up, the previous one disappears. There have been tube amps available now for sixty-some years, and the the modelers have had a whole two decades to replace them?

Ain't gonna happen, Stubby... and more like 3 decades (remember the Rockman? still have mine) and
that's plenty of time to come up with the "ultimate" faux-amp to replace your 1969 Marshall Plexi Superlead.

Those 150-ways-to-polish-a-turd modelers only thrive because of the "bells n whistles" factor;
nothing else.  Companies know this; they know there's lots of obsessive-compulsive people out there who would
rather tweak each aspect of their tone than gettin' down.  And they capitalize on it.

Just as nobody can come up with a great classic guitar body anymore.

Just as nobody can come up with a really cool automotive body anymore.

...some things were done right the first time.

Now please, put the crack pipe, shrooms or whatever you were inhaling down:  It's nothing but a pipe dream.  :icon_jokercolor:

Classics are classic, in a large part, because it's old. I can't get on my laptop and design a creative new body shape that people have known all of their lives. There's a place for new technology, and Justatele is trying to play to those applications.

Lizard, I give you the classic, and the tube thing
now let us get past that

it keeps clouding the issue, we are not comparing SS to Tube here

weare look to build a system that is my band in a box that I can play through that is versital not to need a amp, or to use an amp depending on teh support in place where I go.

that is the issue, the reason I brought up my background is I have ignored this segment being a tube purist, now i WANT SCHOOLING IN IT.

I still think you should delve into multitrack recording software and VSTs for the real deal.  Looping, backing tracks, fx - everything plus
the ability to do your own multitrack stuff.  And yeah, if you really wanna go that route, there's plenty of crappy amp emulator software
out there too which can plug right in.

well, a vox tonelab and a powered wedge will get you there.  The tones are not as good as the AxeFx, but the're reasonable and it's very easy to program up.  You essentially turn knobs until you like what you hear and then press 'save'

Does not have a looper however - but it's small and boxes up well (made my own road case for mine).  Sounds like it will do everything else that you need.  It has the following built in:

1 - a bunch of different overdrive units
2 - a bunch of different amp models. It seems to excel at Vox tones
3 - a bunch of different delay units
4 - a bunch of different chorus/flanger/rotating speaker effects
5 - several speaker models.
6 - ready for this?  a tube (12ax7) that they use to model the power amp.
7 - over 100 different presets, each one you can program any combination of amp, cab, overdrive, effects, etc, etc

The only real down side is that there is a slight delay when switching presets.  I learned to work around it, but it is a PITA for live playing.  Everything else about it is pretty good.
Oh - and I had to open up the brick power supply once to fix it - it blew a fuse.

Oh - this album was done using the Tone Lab exclusively - ran it straight into the board:

Actually, I don't use my Tone lab anymore since getting the AxeFx.  Do you want it?
Blackstar makes some similar pedals, they're preamp pedals with emulated out feature no amp required...Pretty cool..Not quite as fancy as the tone lab....

I must have been living under a rock, in no way did I know that so many FX units were out there,
guess I have a lot more research on them to do, and then to mach them up to a memory unit
and make it all compatibe]e

here is a question, how many of them have drum machines in them?

If you're looking for something a bit more stripped down, I've considered the SansAmp Tri-AC. No bells and whistles, but 3 channels of good tones in a 1 of three stomp (so you're not dancing to switch between pedals)

simple is a big plus with me

I really do not need 500 effects, just it seems the boards that direct plug in have that. 3 on call at any time sounds good

have you used that unit?

No - but I have played original Sans Amps, and have a  Behringer knockoff. There are some youtube videos if you want to see if it warrants further investigation.  IMHO It does medium-low gain Marshall better than most pedals.
I was considering getting a Tri-Ac for low volume direct-PA no amp setup.  I bought the Behringer more or less to see if I wanted to track down a Tri-Ac.

I've played through a tri-ac.  It was pretty good, but a bit buzzy.

I think what you need to do now is hit a GC with your own (small) PA and a guitar.  Then tell them to line up every modeler in the store.

you know you are right MayFly, but the GC by me is full of, well lets say I went there on Friday ready to buy the amp I bought Saturday at Sam Ash, after being ignored till I walked up to 2 sales guys talking about plans for the night, the guy who was helping me seemed like he wanted to be elsewhere till he pawned me off on someone else and that guy was rude to  me when I said I wanted to see one of those amps on sale and told me they did not stock it, I asked how come they were advertising it if it was not in stock and he said home office made up the sales. Needless to say when I went to Sam Ash they seemed interested in my business, asked me when I was first looking at the amps if I needed help, set up 3 amps in a room for me to demo, and got my wife a diet coke when she said she was thirsty. The girl who helped me was very polite and went out of her way to make the sale. I think I prefer Sam Ash over GC
but now that I have made up my mind on a digital recorder I guess I need to see about a board.
