Oil Based Stains

So far, I have only used Minwax and Woodburst stains.. unfortunately it seems that woodburst is no longer in business, and after testing several different minwax colors on scrapwood for this project, I can't find anything that comes close to what is in my head...  :tard:

can anybody recommend a good alternative for Minwax? is General Finishes suitable for this?

Also, I always thought (must have read it somewhere) that Oil stains bring out the grain/figuring better.. is this correct, or is there any advantage to using Water based or Gel Finishes?

Any suggestions are welcome!!
oh, the color I am looking for would be somewhere between amber and brown, not too reddish..

oil stains bring out the grain because the oil is the finish and give some gloss effect to the otherwise dull dye finish

you can use any alcohol or acetone or mek based dye and oil over it.  maybe even water soluble dyes as well (check first)

go to mohawkfinishing.com and find a local distributor, they got everything you need

What Woodburst color(s) were you looking for? I have some unused and partially used bottles left over.

Hey Jack,
I actually don't know, as I can't find their color chart back :)
I am thinking something a couple of shades darker than a yellowish amber... but not quite brown .... if that makes sense :)

the point is, the neck itself is aged a little into an amber (80s MIJ strat) and I want at least a little contrast between the neck and the body.
