Oil and a maple neck

My son wants a natural feeling neck, in maple for his velocity build.  He does not want roasted.

I know Tru-Oil will build and create a shine and that is not the finish he is looking for.  Are there any oils that can be used to condition the neck and not leave a shine?  I have also used satin poly with success as well.  My concern also as well is voiding the warranty with an oil finish.

Tonar did this finish on the neck of Cherry Bomb a little over five years ago and it still looks sweet and feels like butta!
Would not worry about the warranty issue, anyway, has not been an issue for me.
Good luck and be sure to post some pics of what ever you end up with...
:rock-on:

What about quartersawn maple? Technically requires a finish but is more stable. I can't see a QS maple 59 round with a Warmoth truss ever warping outside of the most extreme changes in heat and humidity.

With Tru Oil, if you wipe it on and off it doesn't have to build and be buffed. My musicman is like that no shine at all.

Although I do like the look of the BLO also.

I have lost count of the Warmoth necks I have finished the backs of with boiled oil and have had one go bad; but remember the warranty is forfeit.

Did you mean that as written, or did you mean (....boiled oil and have had ONLY one go bad:.....)

As it is written you are saying that you have had enough of them go bad that it is evident you are a slow learner. I am assuming this is not the case.

If the neck will have a normal truss rod (e.g. Warmoth's Vintage Modern), I'd go with quarter-sawn maple, ideally 2-piece, and use a Wudtone clear. It's very similar to a Tru Oil finish, just a little more solid and waxy-feeling; it's still lighter than a typical poly finish, or even a nitro finish. Doesn't require the upkeep of most oil finishes.

If the neck will be Warmoth's Pro construction, with the much hevaier truss rod, and your son isn't going to be subjecting it to really heavy string tension and violent abuse, any kind of maple should be fine and any oil or wax finish will be more than enough. I've got a completely unfinished Warmoth Pro maple neck which, after some 6 years of abuse with various bodies, including very thick strings in the slightly-odd DADDAD tuning, has never needed a single adjustment. Not for tuning/string tension changes, not for climate, nothing. That truss rod, along with the 2-piece construction, gives you an almost entirely immobile neck. I can only imagine that if you were to use quartersawn maple, it would be so rigid you'd struggle to get enough bow.

True oil on 1 one-piece Maple VM neck with zero issues.  On year 3!

True oil on Modern Maple with zero issues.  4 years!

Hope I'm not hijacking, but should I infer that a tru oil finish on a one piece maple Vintage neck would be likely to have issues?

Just ordered one today and planned to go oil since I prefer a more natural/satin finish and it's my first finish job and it sounds simpler w/ significantly better chance of acceptable results than a poly or nitro finish.

I've finished half a dozen maple necks with Tru-Oil and had no issues with any of them. And you can get anything from a satin finish to glass smooth.

With Tru-Oil, a very little amount goes a LOOOOONG way!

I prefer Linseed Oil on unifinished/sanded Maple necks, extremely light amounts. If they have a Rosewood board then I use Lemon Oil on it.

With all of the above, wipe off any excess and buff. :)
