Has anyone here reshaped a roasted maple Warmoth neck?

Has anyone here reshaped a roasted maple Warmoth neck? I built strat a couple of years ago, which is great in every way, but I can’t get used to its neck profile. For some reason I ordered it with a V shaped Boatneck profile and I would like to reshape to a more rounder profile like the 59 Roundback, which I really like. But before starting I am interested in hearing about other members experiences in reshaping roasted Warmoth necks.

It's a Vintage Modern construction and I understand that I will invalidate the warranty if I modify the neck. I am not planning on sanding much, I just want to get rid of that uncomfortable V-shape. But I don't want to ruin the neck and that's why i am asking for other owner's experiences.

Here is a Warmoth's comparison between the two profiles. If the truss rod is sits at the same distance from the fretboard, then it shouldn't be a problem to reshape the neck a little bit.

Boatneck

• Similar to: Vintage Tele® (52 Reissue)
• Thickness at 1st Fret: 1.00"
• Thickness at 12th Fret: 1.00"

The Boatneck is the same thickness as the Fatback, with smaller shoulders. This results in the same fat feel in the palm, but easier access for the fingers and thumb.







59 Roundback

• Similar to: 1959 Gibson® Les Paul®
• Thickness at 1st Fret: .860"
• Thickness at 12th Fret: .960"

The 59 Roundback is based on early Les Paul® neck dimensions. It is also our neck profile most similar to the PRS® neck shape.

I have reshaped 4 or 5 but never a roasted one. I would say if you do it less is more as far as wood removal.

Can't stress this enough. The force of the truss rod can crack the back of a Roasted Maple neck if it isn't thick enough.

Ever wonder why Wizard profile isn't available on Vintage and Vintage/Modern necks with Roasted Maple shaft wood?

I’m pretty particular about the way my necks feel as most of you can agree. There isn’t a single Strat I’ve ever owned that I didn’t reshape to my liking. I’ve done 4 Fender Strats and a Musikraft Strat with great success. I love these necks.

Fast forward to this year, I finally decided to give Warmoth a try. I like my necks 0.75” at the 3rd fret and graduating to about 0.79”-0.80” at the 9th.

Went in on this warmoth Strat neck and guess what? Went right to truss rod at about 0.775 at the 7th fret. It hurts my soul tbh. I have three other necks here that I have to reshape in some form...

Scary story. I am not looking at reshaping it to anywhere near as thin as that guy's neck. Just 2-3 mm From 1.00" to 0.86"-0.96" like the 59 Roundback. But I will probably drop the idea, because I get the impression that the general opinion here seems to be that it's to risky to reshape a roasted maple neck.

Thanks to everyone for the input. I might just order a new neck instead. I was just hoping to be able to avoid the steep total cost for a new including PLEK and the time it will take to finish it.

That reshaping was of course more extreme than you had intended, but possibly better to err on the side of caution with roasted maple.
