Plus, variable names are often abbreviations for longer terms or phrases and made up of single syllables trained together to form a unique word/identifier. The military originated that sort of thing. Abbreviations like "ComSubLant" for "Commander, Submarines, Atlantic" or "ComPacFlt" for "Commander, Pacific, Fleet", etc. are as common as dirt.
