Some of you may remember I was considering building a 4x12 cab.  http://www.unofficialwarmoth.com/index.php?topic=6197.0

Jackthehack had the great idea of looking for a used one, which I did.  Except I was going to find a road-worn one and harvest the speakers for my own build.  I actually found a couple of Marshall 1960A cabinets locally for $300 that looked to be in pretty good condition in the photos.  Before buying one, however, I wanted to try one out.

Today, a friend of mine and I went to Guitar Center so I could help him pick a starter pack for his 8 year old.  I brought along my Warmoth spalted soloist and asked to play the JSX head (I have a Peavey JSX 2/12 combo) through the 1960A.  They also had a Peavey JSX 4x12 cabinet, as well.  What the hell, I decided to A/B them in their sound room.  Chunk, crisp, and clean, the JSX beat the 1960A hands down.  I looked at the price tag on the JSX and the only price was the list price, $975.  I asked the salesman what the selling price was for this BRAND NEW JSX.

He came back and said, "Its a clearance item, $397.74."  SOLD.

The only down side is that now I don't have an excuse to build a cabinet.

so, you're using the speakers from the peavy cab and building your own cab?

BTW, awesome jam station. Got what you need for a band, two guitars and a bass.

No, not using the speakers from the cab.  I'm keeping this cab as is.  Now I have no excuse to build one.  You're right about having what I need.  I usually run my drum machine through the bass amp, and a bassist can play through it at the same time, or my drum machine does bass lines, as well.

That rig will hurt people. :headbang:

It could, but note the THD Hot Plate on top of the amp, right corner.  :laughing7:

What would your home built cab have looked like?  Did you have a design in mind?

Very similar.  It was going to be about 30x30x14, with a slant upper top.  I was going to model it off the dimensions of the Bogner 4x12.

Your guitar rack looks a lot like mine, sorry for the unrelated post Doc, but I was wondering if you have problems with the foam on the rack.. if its foam that is.  Mine gets indented when I leave the guitars on it for more than a couple days and  its gotten to the point where I need to replace all of it.. i think.  Do you have these problems?

Nice rig by the way.  I really dig the 3/4 stack.

Thanks regarding the 3/4 stack.

Regarding the guitar stands, they smoosh as soon as I put a guitar there.  If I take one out for a couple of days, they reinflate.  No need to replace anything.  I think this is what they're designed to do.

Killer score Doc, holy discount!  Now you need to update your avatar.  :laughing7:

How's the volume level with the hot plate?

That's fricking tit's Doc, and looks badass...... :headbang1:

On the guitar holder, I'd thought of one of those. But it looks as though it's just as any regular stand and puts unneeded presure on the neck. Just in a different direction. I'm thinking of buying some wall hangers and hang mine around the room...

What's the geetars to the right, not coming to surface from memory bank.... :icon_scratch:

The hot plate is new, too.  Haven't had a chance to play with it yet.  :icon_biggrin:

Thanks, bud!  :headbang1:

The stands work great since I don't want to damage the walls with holders.

Geetars, right to left:  bloodwood soloist, spalt soloist, empty space for blue quilt strat, wild maple/cherry burst strat, white strat with EMGs.   :laughing7:

Oh i just noticed the GT-10. how do you like it? I"ve had mine for about 2 months now and I love it.

I'm still learning it.  I went from a GT-3 to this so there is a lot to learn.  So far, so good!

The 3/4 stack is a fun setup.  I used to run my twin reverb into a 4x12 cabinet, and these folks are right, it could move some serious air.  One thing I used to do in my old band when I had this setup was I got a rather long, heavy duty speaker cable, and I would set up the Twin on my side of the stage, and the 4x12 on the other side by the Bass player, that way when he flubbed something up, he could say it was because he couldn't hear me!  :laughing11:  Seriously, though, it added a nice wall of guitar sound to our onslaught!

Actually, this is a really good technique.  Put guitar and bass cabs on *either* side of the stage and everyone will hear everyone - and the audience will get a better show.

THis assumes, of course, that you don't have one guy that is just too loud

Did ya'll find a starter pack for the 8 yr old?

Oh yeah, the important stuff.

My friend was worried that his son would play with it for one day and then it would collect dust, so he didn't want to drop a lot of coin just yet.  They had starter packs from Squier, Epiphone, Laguna, and Ibanez.  We picked the Ibanez pack.  I'm told his son goes straight to it when he wakes up in the morning, and it is the last thing he puts down before he goes to bed.  :icon_thumright:
