You can see the connector below- it makes it easy to swap loaded pickguards. 1 wire for the bridge ground, 1 for jack ground, and 1 for hot.

BTW, those 1983 Strats were actually cool playing guitars. I don't think Fender's fanbase was ready for that change. I did hate the pickguard-mounted jack, but I hate all pickguard-mounted jacks. The unique truss rod and the tilt neck (with 4 screws!) was cool, too.
