New Video: Electric Guitar Pickups 101 - or - Aaron's Pickup Primer

I adddition to the P90 (that I also associate with Leslie West), the Filtertrons sounded really good. And for me, too, Malcolm Young is ”the” sound. Great video!

There’s a huge P90 boom right now (no wonder), and I’m hoping that there will be a good noiseless P90 available at some point. i have been looking at the SD JJN version, but no real reviews yet, I believe?

Ya, you can thank Phil X for that, mostly.

No experience, but I've heard the best two noiseless ones are Fralin and Mojotone. Trouble is, you gotta spend $300 to give them a spin.

I have Kent Armstrong humbucking P90s in a guitar, and they are 100% noise-free and 90% P-90 sounding. If you want the extra ten percent I would recommend Kinman... https://mobile.kinman.com/products/fast-p-90-pickups.php

PS: I thought the Duncan P-rails set were pretty good as well, had them in an SG for a while - and while they arent really noiseless, they are wound RWRP so that both P90s used together are humbucking

Yknow Gibson sells about two dozen humbuckers but only one model of P-90… the original recipe didn’t need any tweaking! Noiseless? Bah humbug.

My picks:

1. Strat - Little Wing (Hendrix or SRV)
2. Tele - All of Led Zeppelin I
3. Humbuckers - Sweet Child O Mine
4. P-90 - Mississippi Queen (duh, that’s the greasiest dirtiest fuzzed out opening solo that will ever be recorded and you know it)
5. Trons - She Sells Sanctuary

Mojotone Quiet Coil P90's. Put them in my Purple Haze and love them (or should I say loved them until I tore it back apart). Dead Quiet.

Strat : Gilmour – Shine on you Crazy Diamond
Tele: Buck Owens – Buckaroo
Humbuckers: Gary Moore – The Messiah will Come Again
P90: Sabbath – Electric Funeral
Trons: Brian Setzer – Hell Bent

My picks
Strat-Hendrix "Little Wing"
Tele- The Hellcasters "Orange Blossom Special"
Humbuggies- Ted Nugent "Wang Dang " DoubleLive Gonzo
Filters- Reverend Horton Heat "The Devils Chasing Me"
P-90's Ya it's Leslie West

Mojotone is working on a side by side vertical coil version. I am very much liking the EMG 58 interpretation. P90 voicing in an active, noise cancelling with more lower and higher eq range. The perfect bridge between traditional and higher gain tones in one pickup. If more gain is needed, a simple transparent boost like the EP Booster works great to push the front end, then the output is back up to par with the EMG 57/66 set.

1. I like the sound of the P-90.
2. I absolutely hate noise.

Has anyone tried the Dimarzios?

I’ve tried their stack and the SD version, but I find their output levels to be a bit short, so I prefer to use the SD Blackout preamp with them to beef up the level, otherwise it’s the EMG 58 for me.

Anybody had luck with just using a noise gate pedal to tame single coil/P-90 hum?

Or does it take noiseless to find the joy?
