New Velocity Build Under Way

With the death of the B&W Velocity, I decided to make a matching partner to my purple tele, Ms Nesbit.  I'm pulling out all the stops.  Found the most beautiful piece of quilt maple I've ever seen for the top.  I requested the steeper of the two neck pocket angles in the hopes of avoiding the last two return scenarios I've faced.  Cheers to W for the wonderful CS.

It will be along the lines of this, but with black binding...Whaddaya think?  Should I do all black hardware or go with chrome?

Indeed it is going to look nice.

Although I think I prefer the cream binding myself but its going to be yours not mine :-)

Either way black or cream, black or gold hardware would work I think. With the cream binding chrome could work also.

Wow. That's a gorgeous piece, and I think with black binding it'll look even better.

Tough call. Everybody does chrome because you can't go wrong with it. But, that also makes it somewhat pedestrian. I think it if was me, I'd do black, with an Ebony fretboard.

beautimus.  My daughter will be jealous.  I'm going to be building her a purple tele or strat soon.

Thank u guys. Gotta go with black bindin to tie my existing and recently orphaned neck in haha. I think I'll do chrome hw.  :headbang1:

That should be sweet.  I prefer the cream binding but I think you can't go wrong.  I'd love to build a Velocity but when I built one up in the builder it got really spendy really fast!

I'm a big fan of cream binding as well, but with that curly top accented with the black, I think a black binding will look good. My only concern would be that the burst would tend to make it less apparent.

I know what you mean about Velocity bodies getting spendy. They only way to buy them is from the Showcase, and even there you gotta want one real bad to justify it. Warmoth has always been that way with carved tops - not sure why. I know they take more time/work, so I don't expect them to give 'em away, but I also know the Koreans are doing them all day long for a small fraction of the cost. I understand that they have lower labor costs, but most of that work is done by the CNC machine anyway, so WTF?

Warmoth uses very thin veneers, so I imagine the carved tops are a bit thicker perhaps?

That looks lovely.  I really want a velocity body set up like a tele but I think I'm going to buy a PRS Vela instead.

I was actually surprised that at least in the body builder, the Velocity requires a binding.  I can't figure out why that would be?  On a Strat, you can have the top finish go to the edge of the drop top and have a clean line to the body wood.  I wonder why you can't do that with the Velocity?

It's tough to say. Some woods won't veneer easily - that is, you can't slice them thin - so the carved top has to be solid. For instance, spalted Maple is basically rotted wood, so it won't bend without breaking. In that case, they have to carve a solid piece - a veneer would break apart upon application, assuming they could get a one-piece shaving in the first place. Other woods are the same way. I have a carved top VIP body with a Camphor Burl top that I understand is essentially never going to be reproduced again for the same reason - the stuff doesn't want to bend. They had a bitch of time making the thing, and Doc and I have the only two they've ever made. Actually, he bought both of them, but was kind enough to sell one to me. But, those are veneered over Maple tops with different backs. Black Korina in the case of the one I have.

Scroll down to the 'Double-Lam Tops' section on this page for Warmoth's explanation. Occasionally, non-double-lam top models appear in the showcase, but usually this is how all their carved-top models are done nowadays.

I've mocked up a sunburst velocity build a few times. Sort of a Strat theme. I'd love to have one of these in a more "rugged", working guitar's build.  I'd also love a hollow/f-hole build for one of these. Would look really cool.

Got it, thanks. I guess for what the charge is I was expecting it to be a half inch slab, but I guess as long as it looks great that's cool.

Black or chrome will look equally good. I look forward to seeing what you decide. The black binding sounds like a fine idea.

In that case that makes a lot of sense...

Awesome, I agree with Cagey, black hardware with some other creme appointments... :icon_thumright:

But there is always "black chrome"... :laughing7:
