so i've got a 5 string J bass on the way and i've decided (after seeing many reviews) to go with Aero ( http://www.aeroinstrument.com/ ) Type 1's for the pickups. however Aero needs to know the string spacing at the pickup locations before they can build them... I could just wait till i get the bass built up but the pickups are going to take a month to build on their own... anyone have a way to figure out the spacing before it gets here? :dontknow:

another thing, I chose Goncalo Alves for the neck wood and i noticed it wouldn't let me select a finish.... am I just supposed to oil it? I choose it because it had the tonal properties i was looking for... i'm much less concered with how it looks.

also in general what should I expect when it gets here and what should i be aware of while building it?

thanks in advance

First off, congrats!  You're going to be very pleased.  Secondly, which bridge are you using?  That's generally the easiest way to judge the string spacing.

the schaller 496... only thing is that the spacing has to be measured at the location of each pickup... i'm guessing there's probably a way to figure it out but i'm stumped. nut width is 1 3/4" if that helps.

If you tell them which bridge you have, they should be able to get the string spacing.  You might have to measure how far the pick up is from the bridge, but it is not that big of a deal.  The strings should be in a certain spot with that bridge.  The nut width is only going to change by a tiny amount that will not really have an effect on the spacing on the bridge side.  I'd ask them if the bridge is enough for them to do what they do.

+1 on the 496, if only because it's such a nice bridge.

good idea, i'll shoot him an email

now as for the neck; what do I need to do to keep it maintained? i'll be playing a lot of shows and touring with it a bit so i'd like to make sure i keep it health and warp free.

thanks for all your help guys.

It's unlikely to warp, and if it does, you have a two year warranty, so you would know by the time the warranty is up.

also one thing i'm curious about (and like the idiot i am, didn't think about before placing the order) how much is this puppy going to weigh? i don't mind a little heft but i'm hoping it isn't a tank either... i've got "rocking out" to do!  :party07:

Such a question cannot be answered, as there are variables that are not known.
First off, you have not specified a body wood, and nor are we aware if you have opted for any chambering options. In any case, the weight of any given species of wood is subject to considerable variation, and we don't know what wood Warmoth is going to pick from the pile for your order. It can be generalized, however, that certain woods tend to be heavier or lighter.

As a side note, if you have not ordered already, I would suggest you go with lightweight tuners, in order to help ensure a well balanced instrument.

ha, I'm sorry. i thought i said earlier the body was Black Korina. and i did get the lightweight tuners, i just figured i'd ask be cause I never ever thought about the weight of the woods while i was ordering... which i'm sure is really smart. :tard:

On my chambered Jazz, I've got a Goncalo neck (I think) with Hipshot's full-size tuners, and it's only slightly neck-heavy, substitute a solid body and lightweight tuners and the balance should tilt back towards the body.

so I have the bass now... it's put together, plays good, looks good... but there's a problem. apparently the pickup holes that came on this body are a non-standard size.... 101.5mm neck 104.5mm bridge. I made the mistake of assuming that Jazz basses just had a standard size for pickups. I got my pickups from Aero and the covers won't fit in the holes. anyone know a place that makes custom pickup covers? i can't find them anywhere.

There are three popular size combinations for 5 string J pickups.  Here's the Warmoth page: http://www.warmoth.com/Bass/Options/BassPickupRouting.aspx

The first is the Fender Deluxe size (4" and 4 1/8")
The second is a 4 string neck and bridge combination. (Meaning the pickups are the same size as 4 string pickups.)
The third is 4 string sizing with both pickups being bridge sized.

This doesn't tell you where to get 5 string covers.  I don't have any information there, but this may help you understand what you have now.
