New Strats....kinda

I'm not sure how you guys do it....but most of you take amazing photos of your guitars, so I must apologize for the quality of these pics.  I have a decent camera too, so I can't even use that as an excuse!!

Anyways...here they are.

1) I rebuilt my #1 strat (swamp ash / DiMarzio Area '58 / '58 / '61 pickup combo) with a gorgeous padouk neck, and rewired the pickguard to a "1 volume / 1 tone" setup as the volume pot closest to the bridge pickup was always getting in my way.  This way, there is actually a wider range of tones available across the 5 positions.

2) I paired the canary / kingwood neck from the original #1 with a really nice flamed Black Korina body, then added Rio Grande "Texas / BBQ" pickups to the neck and bridge.  The hardtail bridge is made by Hipshot and is chrome-plated brass (super heavy).  I'm really diggin the sound of this one!!  Best sounding guitar I have ever played, or heard for that matter.  I was worried they would be too distorted, but they are just hot enough without going over the top.  The neck pickup (Texas) gives you a little bit of breakup and tons of low end.  So far I have played it through a Seymour Duncan Twin Tube pedal and Fender Hot Rod Deluxe amp.  I think the combination of the Black Korina body and the Texas BBQ pickups gets you right in the "sweet spot".  Highly recommended.

Cheers!

I really like the first guitar. It's very organic and natural looking, plus I love red tortoise. The neck is awsome, I would love to try one someday. I am into the sublte looks and it seems it would feel very friendly. Have you tried the mod where the middle position gives you the neck/bridge combo? You dont get the middle by itself but you do get a nice tele sound out of it.

I like the second one as well though I think the zebras don't blend in so well. personal pref... I think some smooth chrome cover would look really awsome! It sure must be nice to have two nice guitars with different setups. Humbucker and single coils, also hardtail and springer.

Nice family you have started!  :hello2:

I luuuurve that first one. I'd build that (albeit with different pickups. Not wild about dimarzios). It's got a little bit of stevie's number one flavor.

thanks for all of your comments...

TT - I've never tried that configuration on a strat - I really love the sound of the middle pickup, so I wouldn't want to lose that!!

Nathan - I too always thought of DiMarzio as "shredder" pickups, however they've got a really nice balanced tone to them.  I might have to look into Rio Grande strat pickups for future projects given how great these humbuckers sound.

Doc - Thanks for the compliment!

Has anyone here built a black korina strat with 3 single coils?  I'd be interested to hear what the result would be with a lighter body and single coils compared to the heavy swamp ash body I have.

Not built yet, but I have a hollow black korina strat body on order (showcase, so it shouldn't be too much longer for arrival).  There is a wenge neck for it sitting in my closet.  The pups, also sitting in my closet, are Rio Grandes:  Muy Grande, Dirty Harry Jr. (RWRP), and Vintage Tallboy.  I've never tried the Rio Grandes before, as I usually use DiMarzio (go figure).  However, this build called for "Texas tone that's bad to the bone."   :icon_biggrin:

Ooooooooooh, very nice. I like em both, #2 especially. Blk korina pairs nicely with the kingwood board..... :guitarplayer2:

I really loved your numero uno in it's original configuration, now it's even better.  I'm lovin them both!
