Greetings to all members

My name is Arne,  and I'm from Norway.

Last year, I decided to take up an old hobby - music. But, I wanted something new in addition to my old collection of -
  • One Burns electric guitar
  • One steel-string acoustic guitar
  • One homemade bass guitar
which have been collecting dust for the better part of 30 years. (OK, I know I'm an old-timer - I'm 25, going on 60 :laughing7:)

Since my late teens, when playing together with a guy having an original, I've always been fascinated with the Gibson SG. So, I started looking around for a used example. During this search, I found some criticism claiming that newer Gibsons having some weaknesses in the necks, making them break easily. This, together with a price-range above my budget, made me start looking for DIY-sites / kits. This way I stumbled across a site called Warmoth.com.

So, June 12, I sat down in front of my PC and ordered my SG. Production should take 5-6 weeks. You can imagine my reaction when I some 4 weeks later on July 7 got a mail telling me that the "kit" was delivered to UPS at 7 PM PST. The shock grew even greater when I had the packages in my arms before lunch European time two days later.

Now, it's time to present my new guitar:
:hello2:  :hello2:  :hello2:  :hello2:  :hello2:  :hello2:  :hello2:  :hello2:  :hello2:  :hello2:  :hello2:  :hello2:  :hello2:

As mentioned above, I wanted a Gibson SG, so look in the upper right hand corner of the picture - a pair of genuine Gibson 490 humbuckers, one R and one T. :toothy11:

The body and neck got its final color, transparent red nitro cellulose during the weekend, and will be rubbed down, waxed and polished in a couple of weeks.

But... everything was not (of course) rosy - I, the IDIOT forgot to buy the neck screws for the guitar, so I got one H*** of a day trying to get hold of a set. I managed - and it cost me.

All together I am very satisfied with the service from Warmoth, and during this fall, I expect they will get one more customer from my neck of the woods. In addition I am starting to plan my next purchase. (a Les Paul, a Flying Vee, a couple of basses    :laughing8: :laughing8: :laughing3: Blah blah blah)

One last thing

Best regards to everyone
Arne

You could use the WhiteBison method, where you forget a part such as screws or ferrules, so you order them from Warmoth. In order to fulfill the $20 minimum, you put a new body in the cart. And you buy a neck for it, and so on.

Velkommen til klubben! :icon_thumright:
That's a nice SG you have there! Looks like a really classy build :)

Shhh, we don't want to force the poor guy :toothy11:

Excellent stack of parts! Now you've just got to do the dreaded finishing/wiring/screwing/cussing, and you'll have a top-notch fiddle to play with.

Welcome to the forum  :headbang1:
Looks like you are starting off with a bang.  Should be a great build...
Keep the pics a rollin' and  :rock-on:

Welcome, and a congratulations on what looks to be a great build. As mentioned, we would love to see updated pics as the project progresses  :party07:

Velkommen til forum! (Ja - det er så en dansk velkomst ...  :laughing7:)

Way to make an entrance!  :icon_thumright:

Welcome! Congrats on your new guitar and from this point on you will never look at brand name guitars the same way again. and as my little smiley face guy says:  :rock-on:

Congratulations!  That mahogany looks gorgeous - hopefully the nitro isn't too thick, the grain looks great.

. . . and thanks for reminding me that I completely forgot to buy neck screws & a neck plate on my order last week.
Oh well - I still have a few more weeks before it ships.  The WhiteBison method does look intriguing....  :icon_biggrin:

Looking forward to seeing this build. And all the next ones! Buy more guitars. Especially because of forgotten parts for already-bought guitars. Trust me, I'm a doctor.

Well Cagey, as an electronics engineer (with electronics as a hobby since I was ten) and a model builder for decades, it doesn't scare me. In fact, during my summer vacation in late August, in addition to guitarbuilding, I'm also going to build a 2x150W stereo / 300W mono power amplifier and a loudspeaker stack with 4 10" woofers and a monster midrange/treble horn, so I have lots of of possibilities to burn my fingers or flatten them with a hammer or shred them with a saw or router or....... - keep your fingers crossed for me  :laughing7:

Just had a quick trip down to the basement to finish routing the top and bottom panels for my speakers. When down there I started studying my guitar body hanging there to dry. Originally, I had planned to use two sprayboxes of paint to get a decent coverage, rub it down and polish it to high gloss shine. But the idea that struck me was: what if I stop the painting now, after one box, while I am still able to feel the structure of the wood. In this case, I will just let it hang to dry for a couple of weeks, wax and polish it, and start putting the parts together. What to do - I dunno....... - any ideas from the great world out there?

Well, I will be back later with more pics and progress reports

Or buy just one part, say a tailpiece and then have to build a guitar around it, only not to use that tailpiece.... :icon_biggrin:

BTW, welcome and looks like a fun first project.... :icon_thumright:

And now, Ladies and Gentelpeople :binkybaby:
Let me present my first Warmoth-project, a real bastard. Pure Warmoth-products, all down to the pick-ups, they are genuine Gibson 490s, one R and one T. :rock-on:
Since I first presented the parts, I have painted the body and neck with nitro-cellulose, and left them hanging to dry.
In the mean-time, I have been working on (off-topic alert) my speaker cabinets to go with the guitar. Two boxes with four 10" woofers and two with monstrous mid-range/treble horns. I am also planning to build all together 3 power-amps of 2x150W or1x300W in bridge. In addition I had planned to build a simple 5-channel guitar-mixer, but found an offer for an Allen & Heath ZED-14 mixing desk (new :laughing7:) for less money than the home-build would cost me. - It is in the mail, expected delivery tomorrow, together with cables for the guitar.
Back to the guitar.
Yesterday evening, I started to mount the hardware on the body, and got half way through the soldering inside. This evening, I finished the soldering, married the neck to the body, and mounted the strings. But the adjustments will have to wait until I have the mixer and cables in house.

'nough babble - here are the pictures.
