Hi folks,
I love my car. It's cheap, cheerful, and goes like snot. With the summer wheels and continental ties on it it feels like a go-kart. A fast one that is. I love it.
I figured I'd like a new gearshift knob on it, but I could not find one I liked. This one was close, but I didn't like the center bit:
So the other day I was chatting with the mechanical folks at work and they said that they could get a center badge made in the VW logo. They managed to do it for free! Sold!
What follows is a little photo essay on replacing the gearknob on your golf:
0 - test fit/look at/admire the new one. Looks snazzy!
1 - getting the boot off the car is a piece of cake.
2 - getting the gearknob off was a pain in the ass. You need to get a steel ring off the bottom before the knob will let loose. I didn't want to destroy the ring as I wanted the option to go back if I didn't like the new one. It took a lot fiddling, but success!
3 - Once in the shop, getting the boot of the knob was pretty easy
4 - I tried to use tiewraps to attach the boot to the new knob, but the end-points made visible buldges in the leather. In the end I ended up using solid core hookup wire. Worked just fine.
5 - I never want the knob to come off unless I want it to come off! A little locktite is your friend
6 - after all that, the knob went on very easily. Hey baby! check out my knob....
