Hey guys, I went to setup my rig again after the hectic holidays, and it seems like my hendrix wah, has taken a dump on me. 2nd time in 2 years, so I am starting to lose faith in this pedal.

That being said, I am looking for a new wah to replace it, I've heard good things about Vox and even the original crybaby, but I'd like to get some more input from you guys.  I need something with some versatility because I typically play blues and classic rock but I venture into metal a bit to. Any input you guys have is welcome.

Update: my brand new (2 week old) MXR carbon copy has suffered the same issue as my wah, (my other pedals and my amp are perfectly fine). So I am starting to really lose faith in dunlop.

I have sent an e-mail to dunlop to see if this can be fixed, but in the mean time I am looking at the BYOC drop in Wah kit.

My crybaby is like over 10 years old and still works great every time I step on it

Like I said, I've heard great things about the cry baby, but I've had 2 signature series pedals fail on me in as many years, and thats just home use. So depending on how Dunlop comes back to my e-mail, will depend on whether or not I decide to stick with the company.

I have owned a 72 Vox, Morley Power Wah, Fulltone, and Modified Vox, which I currently have and it is pretty nice, but the best I have ever used was a RMC Real McCoy. I don’t own one but I wish I owned that one. Unfortunately the guy that let me demo it could not be separated from it, I hate it when that happens.  :laughing7:

Zakk wylde wah is worth checking out. I have one in my collection and it sounds beast!  :laughing7:

I have an Real McCoy Custom Wah, a RMC 3.  It is pretty much everything you could want in a wah.  It cost about $255, but my parents were set on getting me something of that value so I told them I wanted the wah.  It behaves nicely with fuzz pedals, it behaves the same for single coils or humbuckers, it has true bypass (turns out to be quite useful in a wah) and you can configure it to have the level of effect and spread of effect to suit your needs.  It is very nice because if you are having troubles getting it configured, you can email Geoffrey Teese, the builder, and ask him what to do to tune it.  He gets back to you in less than a day.

As far as wahs go, it is the one.  The big drawback is the price.  It you can afford it, it is great.

I have a 70s Vox (Thomas Organ) Wah that is quite nice. Actually with my new rig I am not using it (using the wahy inside the AXE-FX) so if you interested, PM me.

I've been using Dunlop Cry Baby's for almost 40 years (classic type); good enough for Hendrix/Clapton/Page/Gilmore, good enough for me. If you use them heavily they do wear out, you can DIY fixing them, but they're so cheap I just wind up buying new ones every few years.

All the new "signature" models make me laugh...

What are you using for a controller for the AxeFX wah? Are you able to control the throw curve and the limits as well as you'd like?

Ya I've tried a couple other signature series wahs, and I have been less then impressed. Even the hendrix didn't suit my needs, but it was a gift so I went with it. Everything I've heard has said that the Original crybaby is the best bet from dunlop, but as you mentioned they do wear out.  Hopefully dunlop gets back to me soon, and then I will decide what to do.

If it is just the pot that went, you can buy replacements from Small Bear Electronics for a couple of bucks.  Solder a couple of leads and bolt it in place.  There are various brands, but I have not heard anything to suggest that one pot is any better than another.

The best pots out there are the milspec Clarostats, which are about $15/ea. if you can find them, which isn't easy. But, even those are only rated for about 15,000-25,000 operations. Everything else is junk by comparison, so your mileage will vary dramatically, and always for the worse. That's why manufacturers have tried using variable light curtains (Morley pioneered this trick, others have improved on it), variable capacitors (DOD did this for a while), and variable inductors (various manufacturers). Opinions vary about their efficacy, but what they all did was eliminate the problematic pot and rack/pinion gear arrangement. Thing is, the pot with a rack & pinion gear is super-cheap to implement, so everybody keeps going back to it. Plus, it'll fail like anything mechanical will, but it's usually gradual and predictable, while the other methods tend to go tits-up all at once when they finally do fail.

I only used the Original Cry Baby Wah until 2008 when I got a Morley Bad Horsie 2 Wah.  I like the Morley because it is on when I use the pedal and off when I don't.  No need to press down the front to turn it on or off.  I know there are lots of Wahs like that, but I really like the Bad Horsie 2 but I never use the Contour Mode.

The problem with the Wah is not in the pot, I believe it is in the inductor. So not as easy as replacing the pot, but still can be done. However if i'm going to do that, I'll replace the entire guts for something else.

I had issues with my zakk wylde pedal, the power imput snapped off, and one of the capacitors failed. its a good thing I have friends who fix these things. and Its worked perfect ever since.
