In topic, off topic .... i don't know.
The only one that I know is that I love this guitar, I love this sound, I love this song.

Two curiosities
Pickguard, bridge, tuner... all brass.  :toothy10:
Mr Tom Anderson told me  - via email - : *I could not find a mahogany table that I liked. Then I used the birch which has the same sonic properties.  :toothy11:

p.s:
I'm sure, this's a rare quilt maple one piece neck . Absolutely no bird's eye or flame maple.
Absolutely....

Or no?

I'm not sure if that is the birch guitar. He's playing the replacement to this guitar which got stolen shortly after the Making Movies album was finished...

That guitar was the best sounding guitar Mark ever heard apparantly. God only knows where it is now and what pick stole it, but there's a possibility that this was the birch guitar.
If you want that tone, you get a strat, you put this in it ... http://cgi.ebay.com/Schecter-USA-Van-Nuys-F500T-Knopfler-Pickup-Assembly-/130427990199 but it through an MXR Dynacomp, an MXR analog delay and into a vibrolux. Job done. Oh... and you play with your fingers clawhammer style.

That said, I don't have the exact gear and I have no problem approximating the knopfler sound, it's probably 80% in the fingers.

This guy has a good Knofler tone, he has other vids where he talks about gear as well.

Words (and music) by Tom Anderson .
I think that is true :D
That I know: the *original* schecter (stolen) guitar, that Mark played for studio version of TOL, was mahogany+maple (plain) top, pups monsternote not tapped and bird's eye with front dots neck.

That said, I don't have the exact gear and I have no problem approximating the knopfler sound, it's probably 80% in the fingers.

Yes ok, but guitar, ampli ecc. In my opinion are plus that 20%.

Yes, the early Strait.
I love the sound of BIA tour (1985-86)a nd this version of tunnel of love  :guitaristgif:

My 2c?

Knopfler's tone is very much on his fingerwork - he even sounds like Knopfler when he plays a Les Paul!

Yes he has some brilliant clear tone, but a lot of that can be approximated using standard gear. A good  (non rattling) Fender Twin Reverb, well set up Strat with well done electronics and keep it simple in any effects you introduce in the signal chain.

Even if you were ever lucky enough to borrow Mark's personal gear for a quick strum, you won't sound like him. Close maybe, but not him.

Take the understated pure tone he generates and work from there, don't try to be a clone.  :icon_thumright:

A mahogany Strat body will sound a little (read:microscopic) warmer in tone to the standard Alder that Fender uses (all other components being equal).

:icon_thumright:

Absolutely
I love this particular guitar tone in this song, in this live version
I know well the gear that Mark used at the time: Mesa McII+, Schecter Strat ect.
Ok, but...

I don't want to be a clone

Somethink like   :laughing3: :laughing3: :laughing3: :laughing3:

It's a joke, replicate it will be impossible, I'm sure.
As for Knopfler  will be impossible to replicate my (...) sound   :toothy12: :toothy12: :toothy12: :toothy12:
