My Beliefs on Guitar Tone

I dunno, I think jerry's opinions are valid for him. If he believes tone comes from one thing, he'll listen for it and he will hear it because that is what he believes... Same as us. This stuff is all subjective.

That said, I really really disagree that tone exists in and of the guitar, without a player. Give an incredible setup to someone who can't play, and it WILL sound awful. Tell a four year old to just pluck a single open string, and it most likely WILL sound very different than if one of us were to "just" pluck an open note. I think we forget sometimes just how many subtle things our hands our doing.

Player- 0%

This is where you lost me, and most everyone I think.  O% from the player?  I guess that's why some guys sound good no matter what they're playing.  You could put Billy Gibbons on one of those Squier starter packs with .008s and he would sound good.

I could show you my collection of guitars and try and tell you about 30+ years of playing experience, but that doesnt seem to matter.

It doesn't matter.  I would say with 30+ years of playing and a massive collection, you ought to know better.

You’re all crazy!  :evil4: :evil4: :laughing7: :laughing7:  Tone is in the amp!!  :icon_jokercolor: :icon_jokercolor: :icon_jokercolor:

and in that amp, 50% of that tone comes from the speaker  :headbang:

jerryjg is an idiot, no pun intended, he's a morron, I mean that in the best way, he doesn't have a clue, no offense.

Hey fella..I'M not the one who has the dorkiest looking Strat in History as his Avatar.

but you look hot in your avatar jerry  :icon_thumright: thirty years of playing and such a good body? i'm impressed.  :hello2:

not to be an boom-boom there ol' boy, but i don't think personal attacks on somebody eles guitar is an effective means of proving a point. just makes you look like a douchebag.  :tard:

tone comes hugely from the player (IMO). you put a shite player in jimmy pages shoes, give him his guitar and rig, he will still sound shite. just louder. maybe thats not just the pure "tone", but who gauges tone just purely as the sound of someone plucking a string? players play a HUGE roll in "tone", even if not from a scientific point of view, just simply the fact that they are MANIPULATING that "tone" with their playing.

in my personal experience, the two biggest things that i find that affect my tone... wait, lets not say "tone", lets say "sound" instead. the word "tone" seems to mean different things to different people. the two things that affect my guitar sound (not including amps, just purely on the guitar itself) are pickups and neck. that includes neck thickness and back wood. my two warmoth teles have very similar construction, same bridge pickups, and i cannot believe the difference in sound between a wenge boatneck and a rosewood standard thin.

None of you have mentioned the massive contribution that the Pickup Rings have to do with tone or the straplocks or the binding or even the heavy duty Metallica stickers.  :laughing7:

The attack on Alfang's Strat, I don't think any less of that Strat and somehow think less of Jerry.  In 30+ years playing, he's figured out humbuckers shouldn't go through Fender amps.  Can't wait for the next 30+.

For brevity, in posts my moniker is shortened to STDC or sometimes STD Custom.  It wasn't intentional, it just kind of happened.  The motto is my homage to the inside joke and sense of humor of this forum.  Believe me, I would never choose to be called STD Custom.

are we sure this jerry guy is as old as he/she claims? sounds like little teenage trash-talk to me. that call on the avatar is something that i'd hear from a 5th grader (10y.o.) at work.

wait, lets see if i can do it...

hey jerryjg, what does the "jg" stand for; "junk gobbler" perhaps?

schoolyard insults are fun.
