Hi all, so can you take a listen to the intro to Moon Child and tell me what kind off effects Adrian has going on (right after Dave's acoustic intro)... I'm in the
process of buying effects, so I need to make sure I'm covering all the needed bases so to speak. So far I've aquired:

1. AnalogMan-modded (to TS-808 specs) Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer
2. Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail Nano reverb
3. MXR Carbon Copy analog delay (have yet to buy)
4. Danelectro DC-1 Cool Cat chorus
5. an EQ of some kind...?
6. ? ? ?

What do you think? Thanks!

I'm not very good at naming the effects I'm listening to. That guy's got some good tone going on though, that's for sure. I think I can hear some chorus and probably a distortion box, but a lot of that punchy gain is probably coming from the amp.

Re the pedals: a CE=2 is a good choice. There are a bunch of them on the 'bay right now - and prices are reasonable on most, especially if you can live with a made in Taiwan one.

On the equalizer: try to find a used PQ-4 Boss Parametric Equalizer. It's more "sweepable" than graphic eq's, and is a very useful effect. They're getting pretty hard to find at a decent price though. I used to have 2 or 3 of them but sold them... I should have held on to them.

I really like mine, but it eats batteries like popcorn (18v, two 9v's at a time) so you need external power if you're serious about using it. I can get the sweet subtle chorus/leslie effect that I like from my chorus effects, but it's entirely possible to go overboard with it as well a la Cobain.

No sound at work, so I can't help you with the vid :-\

I forgot to mention something about CE-2 pedals. They take an ACA (unregulated) power supply instead of the more common PSA regulated supply. No problem if you use batteries, but if you use a One Spot or other regulated supply like I do you'll need a separate power supply just for this pedal. I didn't know this and thought I had a dead one for years. I took it in to have it repaired and the tech told me it just needed an ACA supply, or use batteries. I ended up selling it anyway because I use a DC-2 Dimension C  for a chorus in stereo and like that better. If I were looking for a chorus now myself I might just go with a CMATMODS Analog Chorus. Their stuff from what I've seen and heard is top notch, and they use the same kind of out of production bucket-brigade chips the old analog boxes (like the CE-2) used.

The 'distortion box' would be one of two Ibanez TS-808 Tube Screamers Adrian uses...  :)
And unless my effects knowledge is on-holiday (quite the poss.) isn't there a ton of delay going on too...?

Right on, picked up a Danelectro DC-1 w/ power supply for $39 on MusicGoRound. The CMATMODS Analog Chorus
is just too expensive at this juncture, mores the pity - looks/sounds awesome.

One more arrow added to the quiver... thanks KB!

Now onto a EQ... I'll check out the PQ-4.

Wha...?! Hey, I made a contribution! I am so proud!

Good for you, I hope you like the pedal :)

There is definitely delay there as there is on the album recording.  On the album isn't it Steve Harris playing it on a synth?

Make some recordings when you get your signal chain figured out.  7th son is one of my favorite tones.  I love the non-mid scooped distortion with the highs rolled off a little on that album.

Got the Cool Cat chorus today, and its awesome!

Got a kick-ass deal on a MXR Carbon Copy and a EH Holy Grail nano that are both in the mail... can't wait!  :headbang:

The last thing I need is an EQ... Noob question: Whats the difference between a Parametric and 'regular' EQ?
(Oh and I've found one PQ-4 for $225...no way...)

EDIT: I got the EH Holy Grail Nano today and I love it, very nice...

It's a pretty safe bet there's a compressor somewhere in his signal chain. The dynamics would be a lot wider if there weren't. He moves around between single string notes, diads, muted and open strings to full chords without blowing anybody away. It's impossible to say which unit he uses, but generally the more money you spend the faster they respond and the more transparent they are.

Plus, lotsa watts are always handy <grin>

There are generally three types of tone controls. The simplest, which is what 95% of guitars, guitar amps and many effects pedals use, is simply a bandpass filter. Turning the bass/middle/treble up or down simply routes more or less of your signal to ground above, between, or below a certain frequency.

A little more complex is the typical "graphic equalizer", which usually breaks the signal up into narrower (and more) ranges and boosts or cuts the response in that range. It's more than a filter, it's also part amplifier, albeit at the signal level. They're called "graphic" because after adjusting things the way you want them the controls end up looking like a chart of your frequency response curve.

A "parametric" equalizer not only allows you to set how much boost/cut you get at a particular frequency, you can also set the bandwidth and the center frequency. They're never called "graphic" because there's no way to predict (in hardware) the curve you're going to create. They're the ultimate, because you can pick which exactly the frequencies you're going to affect and how wide the range will be. This allows you to take very specific "notches" out of a signal and boost or cut them.

So, for example, with a graphic EQ, you might be able to boost/cut the signal between 700hz and 900hz. That's it; you're done, other than the other bands your equalizer may offer. With a parametric EQ, you could move the center point for that same setup from 800hz to 850hz, then set it to only affect a range of 50hz on either side, so it's a boost/cut from 800hz to 900hz. Move the center frequency back 50hz and change the bandwidth to 25hz, and you'll only boost/cut the signal from 775hz to 825hz. The sky's the limit.
