Hey good people - what is the minimum bandsaw size that I can successfully use to cut a body blank? I am going for a "pointy" guitar if that matters. Thanks!
The minimum size you want/need is the biggest one you can fit in your shop. I'd recommend a 14" unit for doing guitar bodies.
The Grizzly G0555 comes highly recommended, more so than many that cost much more. At $450, it's a lot of saw for the money, and there's not much you can't do with it.
while I've not used a Grizzly bandsaw before, the specs on this model (and it's G0555P PolarBear cousin) provide for the option to install a 6" riser block - critical should you ever get to the place where you want to bookmatch your own top/back sets.
here's the riser block kit for the G0555: http://www.grizzly.com/products/Riser-Block-Kit-for-G0555/H3051
if you're going to get a bandsaw, be sure you have the option to cut taller blocks than just 7" or else you won't really be able to use it for guitar building without outsourcing your bookmatched top sets
If you're a careful shopper, you could find a Powermatic 14" unit with the Carter tensioning adjustment kit and roller bearings for around $600 - $800 used. given the option, I'd recommend the Powermatic in lightly used condition over the Grizzly new. FWIW I owned a Powermatic in my first shop, and bought one again when I set up my current shop last year
