Metalics over metalics

I am planning to do something along the lines of the EVH stripes using metalic or pearl paints. Are there any caveats to doing that?  I base coated some test boards last night. I put the red coats on top of those base coated metalics today. The base coats laid out reasonably well. The red metalics I put on top of those base coats did not.

Do they need more that 24 hours?  Did I do too heavy of a layer of the red that re wet the base coats that let the metalics reflow?

Not sure where I went sideways but I want to resolve it on the sample boards before I start on the finished product

Can you explain a little more clearly what you mean about the red coat not "laying" reasonably well?  The description is vague and doesn't really state what the issue is.

Do you mean the red layer is still tacky after 24 hours? Are you getting cracking or orange peel? If so, there's probably a chemical incompatibility between the paints.

I was spraying a Duplicolor Perfect Match red metallic over a Duplicolor Perfect Match gold metallic and 2-3 other colors to see what impact it had on the final shade of Red. The gold coats looked pretty good.  When the red coats were put on, they were splotchy, and little to no metallic was to be found anywhere.

Since my initial post, I sprayed a few more extremely light coats of red and those turned out pretty well.  Its leading me to believe I was spraying way to heavy, possibly re-wetting the earlier coats and allowing the metallic particles to sink/move based on what I have found on spraying metallics. If accurate, I should be able to spray the pattern I want to do, I just need to be doing light coats. Lighter coats seemed to help some with orange peel as well.
