What this always comes down to is the individual as a player.

If a player can hear actual or percieved tonal differences and that makes them feel better about their playing, then the result is, they play better. When they play better, they enjoy it more and so does the audience.

Tone matters. No matter how you want to divide it, explain it, myth bust it, construe it, negate it, quantify it, or any other expletive you care to throw at it.

In the end, it matters to the player. All the other players are unimportant!
 
Of course it is ... just like mine is better than yours. That's why I own mine and you own yours.
